The number of Americans submitting new claims for jobless benefits increased more than expected last week, jumping 29,000 to a seasonally adjusted 219,000 for the week ended October 1, the Department of Labor said Thursday. The rise in fresh unemployment filings was the highest in four months. Economists polled by the Reuters news agency had forecast 203,000 applications for the latest week, coming as officials at the U.S. central bank continue efforts to tame the worst inflation in four decades.

More frequent testing may be needed for students, teachers, staff, and adult volunteers who are not fully vaccinated and engaged in school athletics and other extracurricular activities. Testing at least once per week is recommended for high-risk sports and extracurricular activities (those that cannot be done outdoors or with masks) at all community transmission levels. New weekly applications for jobless benefits rose unexpectedly last week, according to data released Thursday by the Labor Department. In the week ending July 3, the seasonally adjusted number of initial claims for unemployment insurance totaled 373,000, rising 2,000 above the previous week’s revised total of 371,000. Another 99,001 people applied for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), a program created in March 2020 to expand jobless aid to gig workers, contractors and others who don’t qualify for traditional unemployment benefits. Twenty-six states have pulled out of the program, which expires in September.

New weekly applications for unemployment insurance rose last week for the first time since April, according to data released Thursday by the Labor Department. In the week ending June 12, seasonally adjusted initial jobless claims totaled 412,000, rising by 37,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 375,000. Claims had fallen in every consecutive week since the week ending May 1 before last, setting a series of new post-lockdown record lows.

New claims for unemployment benefits rose to 1.41 million last week, data from the Department of Labor showed Thursday. This is the 18th consecutive week of initial claims above 1 million. Prior to March, initial claims had never risen as high as 700,000. Economists had forecast 1.3 million claims. The prior week was initially reported as 1.3 million claims.
