weekly Garden Thread - June 27 - July 3, 2020
June 27, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 06/27/2020 6:25:41 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

“Post Humus,” Patti Tana

Scatter my ashes in my garden
so I can be near my loves.
Say a few honest words,
sing a gentle song,
join hands in a circle of flesh.
Please tell some stories
about me making you laugh.
I love to make you laugh.

When I’ve had time to settle
and green gathers into buds,
remember I love blossoms
bursting in spring.
As the season ripens
remember my persistent passion.

And if you come in my garden
on an August afternoon,
pluck a bright red globe,
let juice run down your chin
and the seeds stick to your cheek.

When I’m dead I want folks to smile
and say, “That Patti, she sure is
some tomato!”

And sometimes I prefer both of us pickled.

Lower Midwesterner with a container garden checking in checking in.

I had a nice crop of black swallowtail caterpillars decimating my dill. They have all moved on and I can harvest dill again. I’m hoping to see some nice butterflies soon.

My lavender plant that went gangbusters and got me a nice little crop of buds has great leaf growth but no new buds forming. I’m wondering if it’s not getting enough sun. It’s aesthetically pleasing where it is so I can’t bring myself to move it to the sunnier side of the porch.

It’s also now Swiss chard season which will turn into any leafy green but swims chard in a few weeks. I swear it grows better once I start cutting it and i end up eating it 3 or 4 times a week.

I hope everyone else is beginning to harvest.

“Post Hummus”

Tomatoes sliced,
Dance in a ring,
Olives black,
Give it some zing.
From the East,
Humble Chick Pea.
in mystic union
with Sesame.
Garlic stings
My blinded eyes,
Lemon smiles
At the surprise.
Visions of Arabian Nights
Cloud my gastronomic flights.

Ah...Hummus is such a delight!

((((Just made that up)))

Our cucumbers are really producing. We've picked over a dozen nice cukes, plus some sweet onions. These make a great relish.
Tomatoes are hard and green. I don't know why they're so late this year.
Radishes were a flop. Wife says plant em deeper. Farmer's Market lady has a dozen for $2.

Cool, slightly dippy morning in the Ozarks. A nice break from mid-90s.
So...where's my jacket ?

Good Morning from Virginia. This is our backyard combo vegetable/flower garden. Peppers, Celery, Tomatoes, Potatoes, and Cucumbers. I apologize for the size of the picture. No matter how I edit the dimensions, it appears huge. I've reviewed FR HTML guide but to no avail...any help appreciated!!

What a beautiful garden! Congrats. As far as pictures and html I can’t help you but when I post a picture if it comes up to big in the preview I delete it and use a program like Paint in Windows Accessories to resize it down.

Hallows Eve peppers starting to ripen I have 2 large plants so I am going to save a mess of seeds then stick the rest in a jar, cover them with vinegar, let them soften for a month or two then make a hot sauce I'll call Halloween Horrors

My garden in both NY and NH are doing well.

I was concerned because of the hot dry spell as we weren’t in NH to water. I figured that I’d come back to a desert wasteland. But everything survived!!!!

Even some seeds I had planted that I had given up on made it.

Question......

I planted some onion sets and a bunch of them are flowering. Does that mean I won’t be getting a good onion harvest from those plants? I absolutely plan on saving the seeds and starting them indoors next year and then transplanting the seedlings as opposed to doing the onion sets.

My potatoes are also flowering. Should those be pinched off?

Cucumber with anxiety ... yep, sounds about right ... ;-)
Glad to report sweet corn still standing despite strong storms.

LOL Funny caption- Here’s some more funnies to brighten everyone’s day:

I can’t believe i forgot to go to the gym today- that’s like 7 years in a row now

And

You know how you buy a bag of salad and it gets all brown and soggy quickly? Cookies don’t do that

And:

Bought a head of lettuce today- should i just throw it out now? In wait 2 weeks like i usually do?

My cukes themselves (not just me!) must be anxious or something .... ton of blooms, not one baby cuke to be found. My jalapenos have peppers, my tomatoes plants have tomatoes .... lots of pollinators around, but I don’t think they are visiting the cukes!

Now that I’ve mentioned this, I suppose we’ll be overrun with cukes in the near future!

PS- found my first “puffs” (balloons) on my Love-in-a-Puff (balloon) vines. I grow mine in an old stock tank so they don’t run amuck elsewhere.

You know how you buy a jug of milk and a couple of weeks later it’s curdled and vile-smelling?

Bourbon doesn’t do that.
