WALNUT CREEK — BART police arrested a man on a no-bail theft warrant Monday night following a major delay aboard the system, officials said. Officers initially responded about 5:15 p.m. for a report that a male was holding a female hostage on board a train at the Walnut Creek station and that he had a gun. BART said Tuesday that that report was discovered to be unfounded. The police response and subsequent investigation led to trains being shut down for about an hour, according to the agency. The suspect was taken to the Martinez Detention Facility.

The FBI asked for the public’s help Monday in identifying people who have severed underground fiber-optic cables throughout the Bay Area. Over the past year, vandals have used tools to intentionally cut the cables in Berkeley, Fremont, Alamo, Walnut Creek and San Jose in 10 separate incidents, most of which happened in the middle of the night, said FBI Special Agent Greg Wuthrich. A transgender youth leader was charged with murder Monday in the fatal stabbing of her boyfriend in Walnut Creek, a prosecutor said. Akira Tajah Jackson, 24, of Oakland was also charged with an enhancement for using a large kitchen knife to kill 56-year-old Alan Gray in his home on Santa Rita Drive at about 9:20 a.m. Thursday.
