OLYMPIA, Wash. — Four Washington state electors who cast their vote for someone other than Democrat Hillary Clinton will each be fined $1,000 next week, the secretary of state's office said Thursday. David Ammons, a spokesman for Secretary of State Kim Wyman, told The Associated Press that the electors will have 60 days to pay the fine, and said the office is putting together an appeals process in case of a challenge. Clinton won the state's popular vote last month, earning her 12 electoral votes. Under state law, presidential electors — who are chosen by their party at their state...

Elector Bret Chiafalo, who earlier in the day said he planned to vote for Republican Ohio Gov. John Kasich, said that he ultimately changed his vote to former Secretary of State Colin Powell after conversations with other Washington electors. Including Chiafalo, three electors voted for Powell and one voted for Faith Spotted Eagle.

A Democratic electoral college elector in Washington state is refusing to vote for Hillary Clinton even if she wins the popular vote. The reason? He said he believes Clinton is a “criminal” who doesn’t care enough about American Indians and “she’s done nothing but flip back and forth.” If he sticks to his word, Clinton will need 271 electoral college votes to win the White House.

Washington State holds its Republican primary on Tuesday, and with one candidate left in the race, there's not too much drama about the outcome. But in a twist — and what would the 2016 race be without a twist? — 40 of Washington's 41 delegates selected Saturday to attend the Republican National Convention in July are Ted Cruz partisans. Cruz supporters outnumbered Donald Trump supporters at the state GOP convention in Pasco, and they were better organized, pushing through the Cruz slate of delegates over occasional protests from Trump backers, who noted repeatedly that Cruz is no longer in the...

A group of University of Washington students showed their support for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump by building a “Trump wall” on the school’s Red Square. Two days after Donald Trump made his first campaign visit to Washington state, a group of University of Washington students erected a “Trump wall” on UW’s Red Square on Monday to show their support for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee. About 10 Trump supporters, most of whom appeared to be UW students, erected the plywood wall at about 1 p.m. It was painted to resemble a brick wall, with the words “Trump Wall” painted...

Donald Trump threw a new claim Hillary Clinton's way at a Saturday rally, telling the crowd that she wants to do away with the Second Amendment. "Hillary Clinton wants to abolish the Second Amendment. She wants to abolish it," Trump said at a Saturday rally in Lynden, Wash. "Hillary Clinton wants to take your guns away and she wants to abolish the Second Amendment. She wants to take the bullets away." "We're going to cherish the Second Amendment, we're going to take care of the Second Amendment." Clinton is in favor of universal background checks, closing loopholes on gun purchases...

One of the nice things about being in a late vote state is the candidates least worthy of office have usually dropped out by May, so my vote is not thrown away. From the get go I have been a Cruz supporter, and Trump was my second choice. I still do belive that Cruz is a better representative of conservative values, however the reality is he cannot get the required delegates by the end of the primaries to avoid a brokered convention where the GOPee can shoehorn a Jeb or Romney into the general election and completely circumvent the entire...

To refresh your memory: Washington State has 44 delegates, winner-take-most (majority takes all) proportional primary (20% threshold), with statewide and CD delegates. Closed primary (deadline to switch is next week; deadline for first-time voters is next month), but it’s all mail-in. …And, just think! Five months ago, I would have had to write another three or four sentences to explain all of that. Now I can just assume that most of you folks will be able to follow along. It’s an ill wind, huh? Anyway, it turns out that Ted Cruz has already done the work – before the deadline...

VANCOUVER, Washington—If it’s too late for Bernie Sanders to catch his rival Hillary Clinton and win enough delegates to become the Democratic Party’s nominee for president, someone forgot to tell Bryan Anaya. Anaya, a 27-year-old construction worker from Vancouver, awoke at 5:30 a.m. Sunday because he’d heard on a radio talk show that Sanders had planned a rally in his city, in advance of Washington’s democratic caucus on Saturday. He and his girlfriend, 28-year-old Nichole Vega, dressed her two children, 6-year-old Julissa and 2-year-old Julian, and headed to Hudson’s Bay High School to wait in line in a blustery Pacific...

Another person has entered the race for the 43rd Legislative District House seat. And if voted in, that person hopes to make history. Danni Askini has announced her intention to run for the 43rd Legislative District -- an area that covers much of Seattle's popular neighborhoods, including downtown, First Hill, Capitol Hill, South Lake Union, Eastlake, Wallingford, and Ballard. She announced Tuesday her intention to run for the position that will be left vacant as current State Rep. Brady Walkinshaw moves on to run for the US House of Representatives. If Askini wins, it could place a unique voice in...
