WASHINGTON - On this snow-draped Inauguration Day in Washington, a few people on Capitol Hill were thinking about the worst: a catastrophic attack that could kill or incapacitate most members of Congress, the president, the vice president and the cabinet. advertisement The unseen presence at this first inauguration since Sept. 11, 2001, is al-Qaida, whose terrorists showed three years ago how capable they were of killing thousands of Americans in one place at one time. At 9:30 on inauguration morning, in his office in the Longworth Building, a short walk from where the president would soon take his oath, Rep....

When President Bush raises his right hand and places the other one on the Bible today, more than usual attention will fall on the man administering the oath of office. Except for a quick sighting this week, U.S. Chief Justice William Rehnquist hasn't been seen in public since last fall when he underwent treatment for thyroid cancer. The rumor mill has since been working overtime, with Supreme Court watchers speculating on when the Chief, who is 80, might decide to retire. The theory du jour is that he is determined to stay through the end of the Court's term in...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush prepared to take the oath of office for a second term on Thursday and will tell Americans "the survival of liberty in our land" increasingly depends on advancing freedom abroad, in an allusion to his hotly contested Iraq policy. Three hours before his swearing-in ceremony on Capitol Hill, Bush, who has considerably less popular support than other recent incumbents after their re-election, attended a morning church service with his family at St. John's Episcopal Church, attended by presidents since it was organized in 1815. At noon (1700 GMT), Bush will stand on the steps of...

ITHACA NY-President George W. Bush will receive a bitter inauguration welcome on the Ithaca Commons this Thursday. A protest rally with speakers, music and an open mike is being held Jan. 20 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Bernie Milton Pavilion. "The umbrella reason we are doing this," organizer Fay Gougakis said,"is so we will unite people and point out the voting irregularities that happened in this election. I'm tired of the phrase 'conspiracy theory.' There is legitimate concern that Bush stole this election." Steve Calkins, the other organizer of Thursday's rally, said, "I feel that we need to...

Although President George W. Bush received more votes than any other presidential candidate in history, not everyone will be celebrating his second inauguration in the nation’s capital today. Pro-terrorist socialists and violent extremists pledge “direct action” – including initiating physical confrontations with police officers – that could divert critical attention from a terrorist attack. Among those who will take part in today’s protests is a group known as Anarchist Resistance, but is more commonly called “the Black Bloc” for the black ski masks its members wear destroying property. Its history of riotous incitement is well-known. On the first day of...

Springdale High School junior who speaks out on behalf of veterans is to receive an award today at a presidential inaugural ball. Nikki Mendicino, 16, will receive the Falcon of the Year award from Free Republic, which operates a Web site for "grass roots conservatism." The award goes to a high school student. Mendicino became interested in helping veterans about six years ago after World War II veteran John Kridlo visited her school. She began visiting him and started a Web page dedicated to veterans. Since then, she has given hundreds of speeches throughout the country and has been involved...

WASHINGTON - Ailing Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist showed he still had some legalistic punch yesterday, squashing an atheist's attempt to knock the traditional prayer out of President Bush's inauguration. Rehnquist, 80, is scheduled to swear in Bush for his second term today; he has not been seen in public since October, when he announced he is battling thyroid cancer. If Rehnquist cannot make it today, 84-year-old Associate Justice John Paul Stevens will pinch-hit for him. Rehnquist set the stage for the swearing-in, however, by rejecting a suit by atheist Michael Newdow to cancel the prayer. Without comment, Rehnquist...

WASHINGTON (AP) - You might say the Janet Jackson moment of President Bush's inaugural festivities came Tuesday at a youth concert with hundreds of preteen Hilary Duff fans in the audience. No nudity was involved, but the Vince Neil-style profanity probably didn't win rock band Fuel any fans at the Federal Communications Commission, nor from the parents at the concert. Now the Pennsylvania band is just hoping the concert, "America's Future Rocks Today," wasn't aired live. Borrowing a word from Motley Crue's Neil, the lead singer of Fuel proclaimed, "Welcome to the greatest ----ing country in the world." Brett Scallions followed...

Washington (CNSNews.com) - In cold, snowy Washington, about a hundred protesters gathered outside the "Black Tie and Boots" inaugural ball on Wednesday night, comparing President George W. Bush to Adolph Hitler because Bush is "exterminating the Muslim race." "It is no different in that Hitler killed so many Jews, and George Bush, you know, is exterminating the Muslim race and others," said a man who identified himself only as Don from Florida. Don held up a sign with the words "Vote Republican" written over a Nazi swastika. "It's just a form of fascism -- the Patriot Act and everything...
