The first daughters, Jenna and Barbara Bush, are staying true to their Texas roots with their choice of inaugural jewels by Austin's Anthony Nak. This is the second time the design duo has been accorded this honor by the Bushes.
Designers Anthony Camargo and Nak Armstrong flew to Washington on Friday to custom-fit the twins with jewelry to wear to the Texas State Society of Washington, D.C.'s Black Tie & Boots ball and today's inaugural balls that follow the swearing-in, among other festivities.
The twins selected 32 items to keep them dripping in gold, platinum and jewels throughout the course of this week, and the majority of the pieces are earrings.
"We're focusing on earrings because the girls love bigger earrings and something with a fashion statement," Cam-
argo says. Necklaces and bracelets then complement the dresses and the earrings, he says. All the jewelry is on loan.
Some of the pieces come from Anthony Nak's signature collection, which features 18-karat gold and precious and semiprecious stones. The first daughters have been fans of that line since the first inauguration, according to the designers. Other selections come from their "Nakard" diamond collection.
"Typically you wouldn't do diamonds for girls this age, but our silhouette and the delicacy of what we do is a compliment to young women," Camargo says.
They saw sketches of the gowns the twins had selected from designers Badgley Mischka, Lela Rose, Derek Lam and Oscar de la Renta, and considered design elements such as necklines and colors.
"I think it's an honor, especially . . . to be on the level of designers like Oscar de la Renta and Badgley Mischka. To do that from Texas is an amazing thing," Camargo says.
Camargo says he opened the discussion when he sent his congratulations to the president and said he would be happy to do the jewelry if the first family wished.
"Probably because we're from Austin and we knew each other here prior to them going to D.C., our relationship is very friendly," Camargo says.
Camargo holds the twins in high regard. In the past four years, he says, "the public has seem them grow and become more confident. They're such pretty girls and they can wear couture and wear fashionable clothing. It's the first time in memory that we've had first daughters who were fashion icons. They're going to look fashion-forward and cool and sophisticated."
Those are lovely.
L'd love to borrow those too!
tacky...
I heard chandeleir earrings are out this year.
What a way for this jeweler to advertise his jewelry. But than again I guess it is somewhat patriotic of him. The girls are lovely even without the jewelry.
He's doing his daughters a disservice by letting the do this. They should go to the store and by a nice dress and wear their own jewlery. The last thing that you want to do to your kids is to give them a life that they cannot match when they are on their own. Trust me.
"You know, I'm going to start thanking
the woman who cleans the restroom in
the building I work in. I'm going to start
thinking of her as a human being"
They could write a book like "Mommy Dearest" about the President. The left would make the girls billionaires.
I fail to see anything wrong with this. Many jewelers and clothing designers lend new jewelry and gowns to other celebrities for various occasions.
"The last thing that you want to do to your kids is to give them a life that they cannot match when they are on their own." What makes you think that they cannot match or indeed exceed their present position in life?
They might, but it's difficult. Let's say they go on to lead successful, productive lives as lawyers or doctors. Do you want them to be content that they have succeded in life, or always think that they haven't done enough because they don't live as well as they used to?
Well, sure. I, for one, would not want my children growing up with any sort of celebrity mentality. What percentage of celebrities do you think are sane and happy people? I think it's very low.
I understand that, but the celebrity status of the Bush Twins is not their fault, and they are very happy and beautiful young ladies.
But is it the celebrity status that made them nuts and unhappy, or was their desire for celebrity the result of their unhappy insanity? Most celebrities are such on purpose, these people seek adoration and acceptance on a grand scale, that's probably not the desire of a sane person. People that wind up famous by accident of birth are usually better adjusted and don't run into the standard celebrity problems.
Good point. Having watched the opening rounds of "American Idol", it is readily apparent that many of the contestants have serious mental health issues. Many cannot sing or perform and go postal upon being told they failed the audition. Others speak on how they are encouraged by family and friends about their talent, when they clearly have none. Makes you wonder if much of it is in their heads.
Watching these people certainly fills in the gaps for me as to the problems in Hollyweird.
Those earrings are gorgeous. And so are the girls, always appropriately attired and lovely. They seem to be truly appreciative of these gifts and borrowed pieces, too.
