Reuters news agency this week headlined a story, "Critics Say Bush Inaugural Too Lavish for Wartime," then quoted one "critic," Rep. Anthony Weiner, New York Democrat, who complained that the estimated $40 million for the Bush-Cheney inauguration is extravagant. The Associated Press moved a story that asked, "With that kind of money, what could you buy?" The answer, the wire service said: "200 armored Humvees ... vaccinations and preventive health care for 22 million children ... and a down payment on the nation's deficit." But a review of the cost for past inaugurations shows Mr. Bush's will cost less...

Sorry about posting a vanity but I searched and couldn't find any stories about what the goofballs protesting the inauguration did in contrast to what they were planning to do. Were there that many of them? Did they turn their backs, or did they have old people prayed around naked or what ever? I'm in Thailand and up country so live news is sometimes scarce. For all that the Mass media was covering concerning protests leading up to the event, very little has been posted concerning how it all played out.

To take the true measure of a man, they say, watch not what he says but what he does. Here’s what President Bush did this week: He opened the festivities for his second inauguration by saluting America’s military -- and, in the process, showed what a class act he is. At a time when he could justifiably boast of clear electoral success, of capturing the largest number of popular votes in American history, he graciously took the spotlight off himself and shined it on the people who defend our way of life every day. Attendees for the event at Washington’s...

“We are led, by events and common sense, to one conclusion: The survival of liberty in our land increasingly depends on the success of liberty in other lands. The best hope for peace in our world is the expansion of freedom in all the world.” “America has need of idealism and courage, because we have essential work at home – the unfinished work of American freedom. In a world moving toward liberty, we are determined to show the meaning and promise of liberty.” Developing...

Inside protest headquarters, up a flight of stairs from a discount tire shop on New York Avenue, a recent coordinating meeting veered toward chaos. The 70 activists, who had plenty of ideas but no apparent leader, got bogged down in making a decision about whether the group had the power to make decisions. People needed to lean in to hear one another over the din made by a drummer warming up in another room. Someone confessed he'd made 150 copies of an important proposal but forgotten to bring them, and a baseball cap made its way around the circle --...

The following is from an email I received yesterday. I assume that I received it because of my web site.Oh, well . . . Whatever. Not One Dime Day - Jan 20, 2005From: Bill Moyers Since our religious leaders will not speak out against the war in Iraq, since our political leaders don't have the moral courage to oppose it, Inauguration Day, Thursday, January 20th, 2005 is "Not One Damn Dime Day" in America. On "Not One Damn Dime Day," those who oppose what is happening in our name in Iraq can speak up with a 24-hour national boycott of...

WASHINGTON — If they aren't leaving the capital, they might be going to the movies or spending a quiet afternoon at home. Some even boarded a cruise ship, hoping moonlight and mai tais will take the sting out of President Bush's second inauguration. These Democrats are in denial, not quite ready to hail the chief they fought so hard to unseat. "We all know the inauguration is taking place," said Debra DeShong, once a spokeswoman for Bush challenger Sen. John Kerry. "But watching it is like adding salt to a wound." Democrats in Washington have plenty of company, according to...

In compliance with a lawsuit-inspired court order, the District of Columbia has handed over significant amounts of security data to the International Action Center, a protest group that maintains ties with two terrorist organizations and is a front group for the communist Workers World Party. According to watchdog group Accuracy in Media, over 1,000 pages of documents, 38 videotapes and numerous photographs and audiotapes related to D.C. police tactics, training, planning and the 2001 presidential inauguration are now in the hands of IAC, which has ties to FARC and the National Liberation Army, both of which the State Department describes...

President and Mrs. Bush visited the National Archives to view some of our nation's founding documents. In spite of some Senators Behaving Badly (particularly John Kerry and Barbara Boxer), the Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted Wednesday to confirm Condoleezza Rice as secretary of state; the nomination now goes to the full Senate for a vote. -- On Sunday, Sam and Jan Phillips of Fort Smith will pack into their olive-green Hummer and embark on a nearly 1,000-mile, three-day trip to the nation's capital for President Bush's inauguration. Driven by a deep admiration for the president, the Phillipses began planning their visit the day after Bush was re-elected. "We're just normal people going to something we consider to be special and historic," said Jan Phillips, a homemaker. "I just thought it was the chance of a lifetime to do this."
