  • Mitt Romney as Thurston Howell? Not quite

"Thurston Howell Romney," the headline of a New York Times column (9/17) hardly describes Mitt Romney. Thurston Howell was a character in the 1960's TV sit-com Gilligan's Island who was actually modeled after F. D. Roosevelt, the elitist eastern seabord liberal president. The inside joke around the Gilligan Island character, for those who remember the show as I do, was that Howell was a classic limousine liberal, amoral, internationalist, and out of touch with the lives of working people. A more apt comparison to Howell would be 2004 Democratic Presidential nominee Senator John Forbes Kerry of Massachusetts. Kerry is three...

Gilligan's Island is now out on DVD, reawakening the unanswered questions of childhood: why does the Skipper let Gilligan help with anything when he knows he'll just screw it up? Why did the movie star take a day cruise in an evening gown? Why did two of the richest people in the world board a dinky boat with the hoi polloi instead of leasing a private yacht? And why do any of the other stranded castaways treat the millionaire's government money as valuable while stuck on an island where no such government can enforce its value? Because it's just a...

NEW YORK - Before a recent rally for President Bush in Las Cruces, N. M., campaign officials showed the crowd a video featuring John Kerry's shifting explanations of his stands on issues. The audience broke into laughter toward the end as a catchy theme from a popular `60s TV show accompanied the clip: "They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning/ No one you see is smarter than he." That tack was hardly unusual. In fact, on the campaign trail and at this week's Republican convention, Bush and other GOP speakers reduced Kerry to a punch line: a flip-flopping Boston...

In the past week the 2004 White House campaigns of Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean and US Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts have made automated calls and urged potential Democratic Presidential supporters to help them win an Internet Online Primary this week. Both candidates have developed a fierce rivalry leading up to the 2004 New Hampshire Democratic Primary early next year . [Governor Dean having proved his mettle by a strong grassroots victory in the Wisconsin Democratic Straw Poll earlier this month] In Senator Kerry's call, he asks people to press one to leave their e mail address if they...
