The Time Traveler appeared suddenly in my study on New Year’s Eve, 2004. He was a stolid, grizzled man in a gray tunic and looked to be in his late-sixties or older. He also appeared to be the veteran of wars or of some terrible accident since he had livid scars on his face and neck and hands, some even visible in his scalp beneath a fuzz of gray hair cropped short in a military cut. One eye was covered by a black eyepatch. Before I could finish dialing 911 he announced in a husky voice that he was a...

Today's offering: Assumption of Mary The Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox teaching that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was assumed bodily into heaven either shortly before her death or shortly after. The Catholics do not dogmatize when Mary was assumed but the Orthodox believe that the assumption took place three days after her death. Although this doctrine finds no biblical support and little support in early Church history, it was dogmatically and infallibly declared to be true by Pope Pius XII on 1 November 1950 in the Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus. Read the official pronouncementRead a refutation of the Assumption...

AMSTERDAM BURNS... Interesting to note this report that Amsterdam has suffered a sixth night of unrest after police officers shot a "Moroccan man" dead. The 22-year old was killed after entering a police station where he stabbed two police officers. Eleven cars have been set on fire this week in the Slotervaart district of Amsterdam, which is mainly populated by "immigrants" i.e Muslims. It goes without saying that this deranged "Moroccan" was himself an immigrant, and of course a Muslim. It appears that Amsterdam's large Muslim community are providing the authorities with a reminder of the muscle they can exercise....

He came in at 1 in the morning, and I triaged him. His chief complaint: "Well, my chest kind of hurts, and my girlfriend made me come in." His girlfriend sat next to him, appearing fretful and unhappy. The patient was a 37 year old who appeared to be in general good health. I was tired. It had been a long shift so far, having been spent sticking IVs into dehydrated babies suffering from GI bugs that have been particularly vicious this year. I was shipping demented elderly people to the floor at a record pace, and the nurses in...
