Ms Geymonat added that the gang of at least four men might have broken her nose during the ordeal, and stole a phone and bag from them before fleeing. Both women were taken to hospital for treatment to facial injuries, but have now been discharged. Ms Geymonat said one of the men spoke Spanish and the others had British accents.

It is the 85th birthday of President Mugabe this month and the zealots of his Zanu (PF) party are determined that it should be an occasion that their great leader will never forget. In recent days they have been out soliciting “donations” from corporate Zimbabwe and have drawn up a wish list that is scarcely credible in a land where seven million citizens survive on international food aid, 94 per cent are jobless and cholera rampages through a population debilitated by hunger. The list includes 2,000 bottles of champagne (Moët & Chandon or '61 Bollinger preferred); 8,000 lobsters; 100kg of...

WASHINGTON -- What's in a name? Plenty if it's Kennedy. Caroline Kennedy is seeking appointment to the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., if -- as expected-- Clinton is confirmed as secretary of state in President-elect Barack Obama's Cabinet. There are pros and cons to Kennedy's first bid for public office. Clinton{tfi}-- a former first lady-- had held no previous elective office before declaring her candidacy in 2000 to be senator from New York. Unlike Kennedy, who has lived in New York for years, Clinton was a native of Illinois and after her marriage to former President...

WASHINGTON (July 22) - A Georgia meat processor on Saturday expanded its recall of canned meat products that may be connected to a botulism outbreak. Castleberry's Food Co. of Augusta recalled more than 80 types of canned chili, beef stew, corned beef hash and other meat products in addition to the 10 brands it had recalled Thursday. Cans of chili sauce made at the Castleberry's plant were found in the homes of an Indiana couple and two children in Texas who had been hospitalized with botulism.

In just two weeks, six retired U.S. Marine and Army generals have denounced the Pentagon planning for the war in Iraq and called for the resignation or firing of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, who travels often to Iraq and supports the war, says that the generals mirror the views of 75 percent of the officers in the field, and probably more. This is not a Cindy Sheehan moment. This is a vote of no confidence in the leadership of the U.S. armed forces by senior officers once responsible for carrying out the orders of...

Lee Kuan Yew gives warning to Islamic moderates AFP , Singapore Sunday, Mar 28, 2004,Page 4 Moderate Muslims must take a stand against religious extremists, Singapore Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew said, warning that failure to do so would lead to Islam being "hijacked." In an interview with the BBC's East Asia Today program Friday night, Lee said the silence of moderates over deadly bomb attacks such as the ones in Bali and Madrid made it appear that only the US and its allies were fighting extremists. Lee said "the crux of the battle, really, is between moderate and extreme...
