Helen Thomas: Give Caroline Kennedy a chance
Seattle PI ^ | Dec. 31, 2008 | Helen Thomas

WASHINGTON -- What's in a name? Plenty if it's Kennedy.

Caroline Kennedy is seeking appointment to the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., if -- as expected-- Clinton is confirmed as secretary of state in President-elect Barack Obama's Cabinet.

There are pros and cons to Kennedy's first bid for public office. Clinton{tfi}-- a former first lady-- had held no previous elective office before declaring her candidacy in 2000 to be senator from New York.

Unlike Kennedy, who has lived in New York for years, Clinton was a native of Illinois and after her marriage to former President Bill Clinton, she put down roots in Arkansas. She was a carpetbagger, but won her spurs on the stump in upstate New York, becoming an expert on its problems during her successful 2000 race, a result she repeated in 2006.

Both Kennedy and Clinton have lived in the White House.

Presented during an election season that finds the press playing a critical role in the future of the nation, THANK YOU, MR. PRESIDENT: HELEN THOMAS AT THE WHITE HOUSE traces the reporter’s journey from her modest beginnings as the daughter of illiterate immigrants to her status as fearless journalist who stands up to the most powerful men in the world. Reflecting on her storied career, Thomas offers illuminating insights into the distinct personalities and foibles of the presidents she has covered, and remembers some of the scandals that have rocked the White House over the years.

The fact that Rory Kennedy, niece of John F. Kennedy, directed the film and interviewed Thomas seems particularly appropriate, given the fact that JFK was the first president Thomas covered (and was one she greatly revered). Their conversation is supplemented by archival clips of Thomas in action, as well as photos.
