The Department of Homeland Security issued a national terrorism alert warning that violent domestic extremists could attack in the coming weeks, emboldened by the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. DHS, in an alert issued Wednesday, said violent extremists opposed to the government and the presidential transition “could continue to mobilize to incite or commit violence,” though the department said it doesn’t have evidence of a specific plot. The DHS release was part of a public alert called a National Terrorism Advisory System bulletin. The alert is the department’s first in about a year. The last such bulletin from...

Federal officials are planning to roll out a new terror threat system in coming days, on the heels of new warnings about home-grown attacks. The new system would be the third major federal warning system in the years since Sept. 11, 2001, beginning with the original color-coded Homeland Security Advisory System, which was abandoned in 2011. The current National Terrorism Advisory System is meant to notify the public about an "imminent" or "elevated" threat to the country. However, it has never been used, in part because the bar for triggering an alert is too high, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson...

The Pentagon is warning employees about being potential targets of quick-strike terror attacks -- to the extent of suggesting they change travel routes, remove identifiable logos and avoid large gatherings. The advisory was issued by the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, which protects the Pentagon and its employees, and says recent threats indicate that terrorists “directed or inspired by Islamic State” consider military and law-enforcement officers legitimate targets, as reported first by The Washington Times. The news of the advisory follows Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson announcing Tuesday that his agency has increased security at federal buildings across the country, citing...

A day after the United States government warned of toothpaste bombs on flights to Russia, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has banned toothpaste--and all other liquids, gels, or aerosols--on flights between the United States and Russia. "As always our security posture, which at all times includes a number of measures both seen and unseen, will continue to respond and appropriately adapt to protect the American people from an ever evolving threat picture," a DHS official who confirmed the new liquid ban told ABC News on Thursday.

I’m writing to make you aware of several warnings I’ve received recently concerning terrorist attacks against America, and to ask you to join me in praying for protection from these attacks. Within the last few months I have had several credible dreams presented to me about this, five of which have been within the last week. While warnings such as these are subjective in nature, and dreams always need careful discernment and interpretation, I feel that the dramatic and sudden increase of these warnings merits this call to prayer. I don’t feel it is necessary to give details from the...

The FBI and Homeland Security have issued a nationwide warning about al-Qaida threats to small airplanes, just days before the anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks. Authorities say there is no specific or credible terrorist threat for the 10-year anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. But they have stepped up security nationwide as a precaution. According to a five-page law enforcement bulletin issued Friday, as recently as early this year, al-Qaida was considering ways to attack airplanes. The alert, issued ahead of the summer's last busy travel weekend, said terrorists have considered renting private planes...

Sabotage by an insider at a major utility facility, including a chemical or oil refinery, could provide al Qaeda with its best opportunity for the kind of massive Sept. 11 anniversary attack Osama bin Laden was planning, according to U.S. officials. A new intelligence report from the Department of Homeland Security issued Tuesday, titled Insider Threat to Utilities, warns "violent extremists have, in fact, obtained insider positions," and that "outsiders have attempted to solicit utility-sector employees" for damaging physical and cyber attacks. "Based on the reliable reporting of previous incidents, we have high confidence in our judgment that insiders and...

On the day of the [July 4] event, we're going to put out basically every asset we have."...

In a two-page bulletin, dated Dec. 8, the FBI reported to federal intelligence officials that Rahman was rushed from prison to a Missouri hospital two days earlier for a blood transfusion.
