US issues terror alert for citizens in southern China

The United States has issued an alert for citizens living in southern China after receiving "credible information" that a terrorist threat may exist against US government facilities in the city of Guangzhou.

A notice on the website of the US consulate in Hong Kong, says the threat "also may exist for places where Americans are known to congregate or visit, including clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools or outdoor recreation events".

Last Wednesday, Chinese police warned that Islamic extremists could be planning attacks on luxury hotels in China this week, ahead of US President George W. Bush's three-day visit starting November 19.

Similar warnings were posted on the websites of US consulates in several Chinese cities but was quickly withdrawn after Beijing denied the threats.

I guess China doesn't want the threat publicized. Strange, because China announced that there could be threat, then when US warns they deny them?

I think there probably are threats, I hope we foil the attacks, and that nothing happens to President Bush.

A few years ago we spent a couple months in Guangzhou when my husband was on a job assignment there.

Many American couples adopting babies pass through there because the consulate that clears adoptions is there.

I think the hotel where most of them stay is called the White Swan.

There are many Americans(as well as folks from all over the world) in Guangzhou for The China Export Trade Show, but I think that is held in October.

For any who care about dates, Nov 19 is former Pres James Garfield's birthday...who died in office. Shot by a Madman Named Charles J. Guiteau.

I also pray for their safety, FairOpinion. May the good Lord bless and keep our President safe. These are dangerous times and I do hope others will also take the time to pray.

I pray that God does protect them all.

Eerily, Guiteau had a letter on him when he was captured (moments after shooting President Garfield) that stated that by shooting Republican Garfield that the GOP would be saved ("Now we'll carry all of the Northern States with Garfield out of the way").

Could have been that the advance team for the POTUS learned of something and wanted to get the word out so US citizens were prepared. China probably was only concerned with the safety of our President and wanted the info kept inside the loop.
