For anyone who’s experienced a quality tequila shot with a crisp, ice-cold lager, it’s clear that hops and agave are delicious partners. So, it shouldn’t be surprising that beer aged in tequila barrels can create a sophisticated brew with nuanced flavors. The process is straightforward, but the results can be profound. Freshly brewed beer is placed in casks that once held tequila and as it matures, the beer takes on a variety of flavors from the wood and transforms into something new.

But as much as I love tequila, and I am definitely a fan, of late I’ve been increasingly drawn to other Mexican spirits including Bacanora, another type of mezcal, and sotol, a separate but somewhat similar tasting category of Mexican spirit.

VIDEO Eating ginger candy definitely prevents seasickness. I learned that on a recent cruise. However, on the same cruise I noticed that I never felt drunk despite drinking heavily. So I got to wondering whether eating ginger candy will prevent drunkenness. On May 5, I decided to test this idea out by eating ginger candy followed by drinking 375 ml of Tequila straight. A 15-foot-tall Agave plant is blooming and drawing crowds to the Dallas Arboretum. The Arboretum says the Agave victoriae-reginae is 20 years old and this will be the only time it blooms in its lifetime. Once it finishes blooming, the plant will die, but not before sowing seeds for the next generation. The plant just started opening up and will bloom in the Garden's Rory Meyers Children's Adventure Garden for two to four weeks. Agave victoriae-reginae plant is endangered in its native Sierra Madre mountain range of Chihuahua, Mexico.
