Costco’s Kirkland tequila at center of class action suit
OregonLive ^ | Nov. 17, 2025 | Tribune News Service

Some Kirkland tequila brands that claim to contain only alcohol distilled from the blue agave plant actually include other, lesser-quality alcohols, according to a suit filed Friday on behalf of 13 aggrieved tequila drinkers in Washington and eight other states.

Tests found that some of the Kirkland-brand tequilas were so adulterated they didn’t even qualify as tequila under Mexican law, according to the suit, which was filed in federal court in Seattle.

Yeah...if I want top-shelf tequilla, Costco jumps to center of mind.

Should sell it under the Kroger "Cost Cutter" label.

“....so adulterated, they didn’t even qualify as Tequila
under Mexican Law..”

That’s an easy one.
Costco’s Attorney will simply state;
“Well guess what? Under American Law, these liquors DO
QUALIFY as authentic! These liquors are devised to be marketed for and consumed by American retail consumers, and will only be sold here, in America, NOT in Super Picky Mexico. Next question, please!”

Anyone try their Scotch? I haven’t.

It’s blended but easy on the wallet.

If you wsnt authentic unanadulterated tequila check out Lui Fernandex on YouTube. He goes to the distillery and researches them. He calls out some pricey ones.

No, but I’ve had their dark rum. I can’t find it anymore, but it was pretty good, especially for the price. I hope they will get it back in soon.

The cheapie scotch isn’t very good. The 12 year old is better. My favorite of their cheap whisky is the Canadian. From time to time they do limited runs of bourbon.

On another note, did they ever find Guy Fieri’s two truck loads of tequila that were stolen? I read where each load was worth about a million bucks.

There are weird laws governing this stuff. Yes, Tequila has to be made to the standards set in that region. Same thing is true of Burgundy. If you started making wine and calling it Burgundy, the French would come after you, and we all know how serious that would be. There’s a few other weird things like that, mostly food stuff, but I can’t think of them at the moment.

Flip it over! Gavin Newsom could use the B side as his campaign theme song.

made to the standards set in that region.

All manner of things follow that sort of rule ... wines, cheeses, spirits ... If it's not made in Scotland, it's not Scotch. For example. American wines are (generally) labeled according to the breed of grape; European wines are (generally) labeled according to the defined region where the grapes were grown.

I love a good bottle.

Gin is my go-to - nothing like a Hendricks with a cucumber slice in the summer.

I also enjoy a good scotch — and sure, derby time or down south? Gimme a fine bourbon (If you’ve never done the bourbon trail in Kentucky? Plan a vacation and do it).

I also enjoy a fine tequila - mezcal is better, but...

But my advice to any younger folks who also enjoy a fine drink? If you cannot afford to step up beyond the generic handles? Work harder until you can.

The one exception is maybe vodka. For the life of me? I cannot grasp much of a difference except on the margins between the cheapest jug and the most expensive. I’ve had supposedly top notch vodka with some eastern Europeans - with a platter of smoked fish - and enjoyed that, but it was all “shots” of vodka and what’s the point?

I haven’t *aimed* to get drunk since I was a stupid kid (and hey, I have no problem with people of that age doing so! I did!).

But - you gotta grow out of that. Maybe you even grow out of drinking period. Yet, when you grow out of that? Buy good stuff. Enjoy it in limits.

For those who live in Seattle, we know what Costco's Kirkland brand means.

Take "The Ultimate Flame" joke and replace the word stupid with the word cheap.

Buying Costco's cheap house brand means buying a cheap product.

How about bourbon? Although it originally came from Bourbon County, Ky., I've seen bourbon from other places. I recently had some from Montana which was expensive, but I didn't like it.

On the other hand, most scotch is from Scotland, although when I was in Mexicali, I saw a bottle of scotch for sale that had a Scottish-sounding name--Highland Glen or something like that--but the fine print said, Hecho en Mexico.
