Kerry: Iraq a Great Failure of Judgment Associated Press WASHINGTON - Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry on Wednesday called the situation in Iraq "one of the greatest failures of diplomacy and failures of judgment that I have seen in all the time that I've been in public life." "Where are the people with the flowers, throwing them in the streets, welcoming the American liberators the way Dick Cheney said they would be?" Kerry said in an interview with American Urban Radio Networks. "Since I fought in Vietnam, I have not seen an arrogance in our foreign policy like this."

In an interview broadcast Wednesday morning, Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry defended terrorist Shiite imam Moqtada al-Sadr as a "legitimate voice" in Iraq, despite that fact that he's led an uprising that has killed nearly 20 American GIs in the last two days. Speaking of al-Sadr's newspaper, which was shut down by coalition forces last week after it urged violence against U.S. troops, Kerry complained to National Public Radio, "They shut a newspaper that belongs to a legitimate voice in Iraq." In the next breath, however, the White House hopeful caught himself and quickly changed direction, adding, "Well, let me...

US Secretary of State Colin Powell rebuked a leading Democratic senator for comparing the war in Iraq to Vietnam and suggesting President George W. Bush's policies had incited hatred against the United States. In a rare foray into politics, Powell said Senator Ted Kennedy, an outspoken Bush opponent and supporter of Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry, should be "more restrained and careful" when discussing Iraq and the war on terrorism. At the same time, Powell also stressed that American democracy was enhanced by debate and admitted that he had not seen all of the Monday speech in which Kennedy made...

Sometimes when things are at their worst for America, it seems that even the liberal media are hesitant to go for the Republican jugular. That was the case this morning on the Today Show. I was bracing myself for a heavy focus on US casualties in Iraq, denunciations of the Bush administration, gloomy political outlooks, etc. Instead, in fairness, the first half-hour presented a reasonably balanced picture. I'd say the highlight was a couple statements by John McCain. I swear that the guy delights in keeping all sides off balance. Last week, he was giving Republicans conniptions with his musings...

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), broadening his criticism of President Bush from foreign policy to domestic issues, accused Bush yesterday of having "created the largest credibility gap since Richard Nixon" on education, health and jobs, as well as the war in Iraq. "He has broken the basic bond of trust with the American people," Kennedy said at the Brookings Institution in a speech that was clearly aimed at challenging Bush's credibility with voters, especially by comparing him with Nixon, who resigned as president in disgrace as a result of the Watergate scandal 30 years ago. In response, Senate Republican leaders...

U.S. Senator George Allen (R-Va.) tonight accused fellow Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) of hurting the morale of soldiers and encouraging those targeting Americans in Iraq with remarks Kennedy made yesterday that the Iraq war was becoming President Bush's Vietnam. While Allen recognized Kennedy's right to speak, he came very close to using words that would describe Kennedy's criticisms as treasonous.Allen made his comments at tonight's Black America's Political Action Committee's tenth anniversary dinner held in Washington, D.C.Kennedy was accused by Allen of harming the morale of soldiers fighting in Iraq, their families back home and of giving encouragement to the...

Where does Ted Kennedy get off saying that "Iraq is George Bush's Vietnam"? The Iraq War is about as similar to the Vietnam War as desert is to jungle, but there was Senator Teddy over at the Brookings Institution Tuesday making that statement in a speech at the prestigious think-tank which, if I may quote "is consistently at the forefront of debate on the great issues in both foreign and domestic policy." That quote comes from the first paragraph of Kennedy's speech, but if you (or his audience) supposed it would be followed by a serious contribution to the debate...
