Children Were On School-Approved Field Trip FRISCO, Texas -- A award-winning Texas art teacher who was reprimanded after one of her fifth-grade students saw a nude sculpture during a trip to a museum has lost her job. The school board in Frisco has voted not to renew Sydney McGee's contract after 28 years. She has been on administrative leave. The teacher took her students on an approved field trip to a Dallas museum, and now some parents are upset. The Fisher Elementary school art teacher came under fire last April when she took 89 fifth graders on a field trip...

The God Bless America poster that used to hang in the Lompoc post office lobby is now in the back room out of public view. That's the way Lompoc resident Matt Hughes likes it. Hughes, a vocal atheist and advocate for the separation of church and state, was offended by the sign and complained to the postmaster, who ordered it taken down last month. The red, white and blue poster has a large American flag above the words “God Bless America.” Post office employees were as offended as Hughes, not by the poster but by the postmaster's decision. “We're just...

As WorldNetDaily reported, the controversy began Friday when the agents visited the Great News Network in Denton, Texas, and threatened to arrest staffer Tim Crawford for hiding evidence in a counterfeiting investigation. The agents took 8,300 tracts and left their business cards and a receipt. The Christian group argues, however, that "million-dollar" bills can't be counterfeited because they don't exist, and the tracts – which include a "not legal tender" disclaimer on the front – present the Christian salvation message on the opposite side. The gospel tracts are produced by evangelist Ray Comfort, who told WND yesterday his Living Waters...

An arsenal of exotic weapons - including a sniper rifle, a spear and a set of 8-inch metal claws - were seized from a 23-year-old Jersey City man after his worried father called cops. When South District cops responded to the Greenville home yesterday morning, they found the sniper rifle - with a powerful scope and a laser sight - as well as three Glock handguns and more than 1,200 rounds of ammunition, reports said. Among the bullets were illegal "hollow-point" rounds, police said. In addition to the spear and metal claws, cops found a number of savage-looking knives, including one that had blades coming out of each end of its carved wooden handle. The owner of the weapons lived with his father, his brother and two younger brothers, police said.

What would happen if all personal firearms were banned? It'll never happen, but I enjoy mulling it over almost as much as I like to think about a night without car alarms, or becoming the nanny to Jude Law's children. Last weekend there was some deadly gun action in the neighborhood of Pioneer Square. It was difficult for me to comprehend such violence, especially now with all those crime-promoting London Plane trees gone from Occidental Park. The Seattle Parks and Recreation Department had better hurry up with that proposed coffee stand and the bocce ball courts before something else goes...

Golfer Tiger Woods has been criticised for saying he played like 'a spaz'. Can using the word ever be right? Two years ago I was involved in a linguistic incident at work. I called a disabled colleague a spaz after hearing he'd spilt coffee over yet another expensive bit of computer kit. My colleague laughed it off. It was a friendly bit of banter - spaz in this case meaning I thought he was being a bit of a stereotype like the helpless disabled people you used to see in telethons and charity posters. I use the term with irony...

ITHACA, NY-Ithaca school officials have banned the display of Confederate flag insignia, including on clothing and backpacks. School officials claimed that the flag caused "ill will" among the students and "disruptions...of the educational process." Officials warn that students who "refuse to remove or cover up images of the flag will be disciplined, probably for insubordination," the Journal says. "'We need to shift the focus for kids back on learning,'" School Superintendent Judith Pastel said. This is not the first time that Ithaca schools have banned clothing in an effort to alleviate racial tensions. In 2004, the school banned children from...

An Evergreen High School student who posted Internet photos of himself posing with guns was convicted Tuesday on a charge of possession of a handgun by a juvenile. The conviction came despite his parents' testimony that they gave him permission to handle guns in their home without their supervision. Colorado law prohibits possession of a handgun by a juvenile but permits parents to give them permission to possess guns in their homes - even without supervision. "This is a very difficult case," defense attorney Barrett Weisz said in his closing argument. "We have pictures that raise images of the Columbine...

A Richland County senator says the University of South Carolina needs to rethink its “Fighting Gamecock” mascot if the Legislature passes tougher penalties on cockfighting. If the bill passes, “how can we as lawmakers and other leaders of this state justify a major institution in our state running ads and logos on billboards with a fighting gamecock with spurs on the feet?” asked Sen. Darrell Jackson. Jackson’s question came as Attorney General Henry McMaster testified before a Senate subcommittee asking lawmakers to pass a bill raising the penalties for cockfighting, which currently is a $100 fine. The panel took no...

The Times March 07, 2006 Why black sheep are barred and Humpty can't be cracked By Alexandra Blair, Education Correspondent TRADITIONAL nursery rhymes are being rewritten at nursery schools to avoid causing offence to children. Instead of singing “Baa baa, black sheep” as generations of children have learnt to do, toddlers in Oxfordshire are being taught to sing “Baa baa, rainbow sheep”. The move, which critics will seize on as an example of political correctness, was made after the nurseries decided to re-evaluate their approach to equal opportunities. Stuart Chamberlain, manager of the Family Centre in Abingdon and the Sure...
