Elon Musk's SpaceX's Starship exploded into a ball of fire on 4/20 during its second failed orbital launch in a week. The world's largest and most powerful rocket – which was unmanned - lifted off in South Texas and successfully cleared the launchpad, its first milestone. But the craft was sent into a tailspin when the booster - called Super Heavy - failed to separate from the rocket in mid-air. The mission ended at around four minutes when the failure sent both stages crashing toward Earth, imploding mid-descent over the Gulf of Mexico. Despite the failed launch, the team at...
  • SpaceX's Raptor Engine Hits Power Level for Starship Launches, Elon Musk Says

The Raptor engine is designed to power the spaceship currently known as Starship as part of the rocket assembly currently known as Super Heavy (previously dubbed the BFR). The first Raptor test fire took place in September 2016, when the company was targeting an uncrewed Mars launch in 2018. Three Raptor engines like this one are built in to the Starship Hopper, which has been under construction in Texas and which SpaceX will use to begin testing the rocket technology in real life. SpaceX plans to assemble 31 Raptor engines into the Super Heavy rockets, with another seven Raptors on...
  • Nuclear scientists eye future landfall on a second 'island of stability' (atomic number 164?)

Modern-day scientific Magellans and Columbus's, exploring the uncharted seas at the fringes of the Periodic Table of the Elements, have landed on one long-sought island - the fabled Island of Stability, home of a new genre of superheavy chemical elements sought for more than three decades. In a presentation at the 235th national meeting of the American Chemical Society, one of the captains of these expeditions into the unknown, described how researchers now are eying other islands on the more-distant fringes of the periodic table. "Now that it has been shown that the 'island of stability' of superheavy elements exists,...

LIVERMORE, Calif., Oct. 16 (UPI) -- U.S. and Russian scientists say they have discovered the newest superheavy element -- element 118. The researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Russia made the announcement Monday. In experiments conducted at the JINR U400 cyclotron from February-June 2005, the researchers said they observed atomic decay patterns, or chains, that establish the existence of element 118. In these decay chains, previously observed element 116 is produced via the alpha decay of element 118. Element 118 is expected to be a noble...
