Gray squirrels are Excellent Eating – some say even better than Venison. Hunting tree squirrels in the West has never hit the fever pitch seen in Midwest and East Coast states. There are many reasons that could explain our lack of bushy tail hunting mania, but suffice it to say, if you have a versatile gun dog, it’s yet another great opportunity to get out and have fun. Gray squirrels are excellent eating – some say even better than venison – and they can be found in many habitats. From the Coast Range to the valley floors, the Cascades to...

A squirrel hunter opened fire, hitting his hunting partner in the face. DNR officials were called to the Allegan State Game Area to investigate a hunting accident. That’s when they learned that a squirrel hunter opened fire with his 12-gauge shotgun after seeing movement next to a tree, around 20 yards away. The movement turned out to be his hunting partner’s face, according to conservation officers. The shot caused serious injury to the man’s face, eye, and jaw. He was airlifted to the hospital for treatment. Conservation Officers report the victim was not wearing any hunter orange. The investigation continues,...

But it seems that in these times of shrinking hunter numbers fewer and fewer of our young people are going down that path. Four years ago Jackie Bushman of Buckmasters fame decided to do something about that and created the Squirrel Master Classic. The event is held every year at the Southern Sportsman Hunting Lodge west of Montgomery in Alabama's legendarily rich-soiled "Black Belt" region. The Squirrel Master Classic...

LITTLE ROCK — Capt. John Stubbs of Searcy, commanding officer of Charlie Company of the 39th Infantry Brigade's 3rd Battalion, is proud of his snipers. He has some reason to be. In a 20-minute engagement Thursday, the company's snipers, with help from a backup platoon, killed seven insurgents mounting a mortar attack on a U.S. military encampment at Baghdad, Iraq, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported Friday. "They fought very aggressively," Stubbs said of his soldiers, in an interview with reporter Michael Wood, embedded with the Arkansas National Guard troops in Iraq. "These guys did really, really, really great. I'm real...
