Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), who is running for U.S. Senate, voted against legislation that would bar states from capping the sale of gas-fueled cars; one of the main drivers of the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike is President Joe Biden’s move to push electric vehicles over gas-powered engines. The House voted on bipartisan lines to pass the Preserving Choice in Vehicles Purchases Act, which would amend federal law to block state moves to eliminate the sale of gas-powered engines and it would bar the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) from issuing waivers that would ban such of these vehicles.

Judge snuffs out ban on smoking; Pierce County board will appeal By Kyung M. Song Seattle Times staff reporter A Pierce County Superior Court judge yesterday overturned the county health board's blanket ban on smoking in public places, ruling that the ban illegally co-opts state law that specifically exempts bars, restaurants, taverns and bowling alleys from having to be smoke-free. Judge Ronald Culpepper issued an injunction against the smoking ban, prompting the Tacoma/Pierce County Board of Health to immediately suspend enforcing its 3-week-old landmark resolution. The health board said it will appeal Culpepper's ruling. Linda Matson, executive director of the...

Hey, Hey, listen up. I've got 26 lbs of pork shoulders in the smoker right now and will be up 1/2 the night tonight, but its worth it to be able to sit back and munch on some good ole' smoke pig and talk politics with the kids tomorrow. Who has what on the grill and how's the cooking?

As smoking ban movement gains momentum, youth get involved — on both sides of the issue By MARTHA IRVINE The Associated Press 6/3/2003, 5:31 p.m. ET CHICAGO (AP) — You could say 14-year-old Kyle Damitz helped pioneer a movement that has snuffed out smoking in many restaurants and bars nationwide. More than eight years ago, he and his brother talked the owners of their local bowling alley into a ban on cigarettes and cigars during youth leagues — a minor coup in smoker-friendly Chicago. Now the eighth-grader is helping push proposals that would make it illegal to smoke in many...

NAY-TAH-WAUSH, Minn. - If you're going to sell marijuana, you probably shouldn't try to sell it to the sheriff. <>P> Mahnomen County Sheriff Brad Athman said Tuesday he was motorcycling while off-duty over the weekend when a youth tried to sell him marijuana — not once, but twice — on the main street of Nay-Tah-Waush in northwestern Minnesota. Cannabis poses a greater threat to health than tobacco, lung experts have warned. The warning comes on the day that Home Secretary David Blunkett is due to make a Commons statement about the future of government drug policy. Many young people are simply not aware that smoking cannabis may put them at increased risk of respiratory cancers and infections . Dame Helena Shovelton: The Home Affairs Select Committee has recommended that cannabis is downgraded from a class B drug to class C. This would mean that possession would lead to a caution, rather than arrest. The British Lung Foundation is...
