As was first reported at The Gateway Pundit — US contract dogs were abandoned at the Kabul airport after the last American flight left on Monday. The dogs that were left behind were reportedly from the Kabul Small Animal Rescue. Dr. Robin R. Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane, issued a statement condemning the animal cruelty. “I am devastated by reports that the American government is pulling out of Kabul and leaving behind brave U.S. military contract working dogs to be tortured and killed at the hand of our enemies. These brave dogs do the same dangerous, lifesaving work...

Emotional support animals come in all shapes and sizes—as large and ostentatious as a miniature horse or full-sized peacock, or as unobtrusive as a well-trained guinea pig. Some offer support via timely yaps, others by quiet companionship. Some are friends to all, others take their work too seriously to bother with strangers. In the US, most public places are under no obligation to make any allowance for these animals, whatever their demeanor or size. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines service animals in terms of their extensive training—think guide dogs or medical-emergency animals that receive months of specialized instruction....

You see a dog enter a restaurant with a vest that says "service dog." How do you, or the restaurant, know if the dog is actually a trained service dog? It's a problem that has prompted more than a dozen states to crack down on people trying to pass off their pet as a service animal. "They make me angry, they really do," said Colleen Belanger. Belanger has a service dog and she is upset people are using fake service dogs. She said it is a growing concern as more and more people are taking advantage of the system. Some...

A program that prepares service dogs for permanent placement with wounded veterans and their families has been booted from Fort Belvoir and Walter Reed without explanation, the program's executive director says. GERMANTOWN, Md. — The Warrior Canine Connection, a program that uses an army of volunteer puppy raisers, dog trainers and veterans to prepare service dogs for wounded veterans and their families, has been partnering with military facilities in the D.C. region since 2009. But suddenly — and without explanation — that came to a stop, says Warrior Canine Connection Executive Director Rick Yount. He said his trainers and puppy...

Southern Arizona veterans suffering from combat-related injuries have a new resource. Soldier’s Best Friend provides service dogs for U.S. military combat veterans living with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) or combat related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The Peoria, Ariz.-based non-profit began in 2011 after a veterinarian noticed some of his clients’ dogs were instrumental in helping them cope with their own issues such as depression or uneasiness in public. The program partners with local rescue shelters to obtain the dogs and it is from assisting the veteran and saving the dog that the organization gets its motto “Touching 2 lives at...

Ah, the fake service dog. Like out-of-sync traffic lights and above-ground power lines, they’re one of those things that make my normally mild British temperament fall by the wayside. Allow me to rephrase that - it’s not the dogs that make my blood boil, but rather their owners. Who are these people? You’ve probably seen them. For me, the most recent was a lady in the grocery store with a teacup poodle in a Coach purse. Before that, there was the guy in the health food store pushing a Yorkshire terrier in a stroller. A few years ago it was...

It is a shameful act of discrimination for a business to turn away someone who returned home after being at war with battle scars that cannot be visibly seen. But, that’s precisely what happened to one veteran while vacationing in Florida. Not only is it an act of discrimination, but also what this hotel, and many others, did to this veteran is against the law. (Watch Video at the link) Former Army Sgt. Robert Price simply wanted to find a place to sleep while he was on vacation in Daytona Beach, FL. He was not alone. He had with him...

KANSAS CITY, Miss., May 30 (UPI) --A US Airways flight from Los Angeles to Philadelphia was forced to make an emergency landing in Kansas City after a service dog started pooping in the aisle and the flight crew was unable to contain the mess. After the dog went to the bathroom for the first time about an hour into the flight, the crew did their best to deal with the mess but they were unable...

Hercules, a five year old boxer, saved his family from a roof collapse in their Long Island home after severe snow cause the roof to come crashing down. In the wake of severe snow storms that have struck the New York area, authorities are now urging property owners to clear the snow off their roofs to prevent possible harm and injury. The event began Saturday night when the normally quiet Hercules began to bark as the Hatzis family slept reports Newsday. His barks alerted the family to ominous cracking sounds from their garage, prompting the family to rescue their car...

CLEARWATER — If a dog were to accompany a restaurant chef to work, most people would have no problem with a state inspector kicking the dog to the curb. But when the food vendor happens to be a gas station, and its offerings stop at cans of Coke and bags of Doritos, and the dog is a charismatic chocolate Labrador named Cody, the response evolves into a public outcry — against the state. "Thumbs down on the Department of Agriculture. Tackle some real problems. Human customers bring more contamination — not to mention danger — than a well-cared-for pooch," said...

MIAMI — Since Irwin Stovroff was profiled a week ago on FOXNews.com, the decorated WWII veteran has received thousands of positive letters for his non-profit organization, Vets Helping Heroes, which provides service and therapy dogs to wounded veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan. "It is unbelievable," Stovroff said about the growing mountain of support that also include thousands of hits on his Web site, numerous phone calls and — most significantly — tens of thousands of dollars in donations for his cause. "I just can't believe it. It has been overwhelming," he said of the generous response he's received....

"Many veterans, after suffering traumatic injuries, are “fighting to get their independence back, and dogs give them a sense of independence,” he added. Service dogs are 24/7 companions that can retrieve and carry objects, open doors, call attention to safety hazards, help with stress and balance difficulties, and provide a bridge back to society. " " “You get military people that think, ‘I’m an alpha male, alpha female, and I don’t need a dog,’ ” he said. He eventually overcame his reluctance, and in February 2008 was teamed with Sharif, a yellow Labrador and golden retriever mix from Canine Companions...

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — A public high school has turned away a deaf student's service dog despite a state ruling saying the animal should be allowed. W. Tresper Clarke High School's principal intercepted 15-year-old John Cave outside the Westbury school's entrance Tuesday, a day after the state Human Rights Division told the school to let in the dog. Commissioner Kumiki Gibson wrote that state law "prohibits educational institutions from denying access to their facilities to people with disabilities." Cave left and did not go to classes Tuesday. East Meadow School District Superintendent Leon Campo said Tuesday the school would admit...

Call this tale "Nudie and the Beast." Former bodybuilder Mark DelCore, of Queens, is suing Fire Island officials for the right to have his dog escort him to the beach while he sunbathes nude - which he claims is the only medicine against a mysterious skin disease he contracted after 9/11. The 1998 Gay Games competitor said doctor's orders make it necessary for him to go au natural at the beach - and on top of that, he needs his spunky rat terrier, Cheekies, by his side because the dog provides "emotional support and comfort." A cloud of dust engulfed...

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- The interest in the story over Shuma the service dog continues to be overwhelming. Last Thursday, KCTV5 News told you about a hurricane evacuee from Mississippi who wants his dog back. After fleeing the storm, John Wyrick gave his dog to Lynn Nevills of Independence, because his temporary housing arrangement would not allow pets. Wyrick said he made a mistake and wants Shuma the German Shepherd back, but Nevills refuses. Several KCTV5 viewers have offered her money, as much as one thousand dollars if she will just return the dog. But, Shuma is still in Independence with...
