Emotional support animals come in all shapes and sizesas large and ostentatious as a miniature horse or full-sized peacock, or as unobtrusive as a well-trained guinea pig. Some offer support via timely yaps, others by quiet companionship. Some are friends to all, others take their work too seriously to bother with strangers. In the US, most public places are under no obligation to make any allowance for these animals, whatever their demeanor or size. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines service animals in terms of their extensive trainingthink guide dogs or medical-emergency animals that receive months of specialized instruction. But emotional support animals, who may receive no training whatsoever, are excluded from the laws protection.
SNIP
A crackdown is underway As of last year, airlines can now require paperwork in advance that confirms animals have been vaccinated, are certified as emotional support animals, and that their owners take complete responsibility for them. Since August, airline employees have been able to exclude animals they consider to be a safety riskthough excluding entire dog or cat breeds is prohibited. The anti-vax movement is effectively reversing decades of progress in disease prevention More rules may be forthcoming. In a months-long open session last year, the department received around 4,500 comments on the topic. In response, it announced in August this year that a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on the transportation of service animals would come as soon as it had reviewed these comments. Many came from a coalition of stakeholdersmultiple US carriers, flight attendant and pilot unions, guide-dog foundations, and members of the disability communitywho have asked federal officials to up the ante and put further restrictions in place.

Hey!!! What about my emotional support black mamba???
But these people have great emotional needs - like the great narcissistic need for attention, for example.
I despise everyone who is dragging their animals around in the Grocery stores, movie theater, malls, etc.
It’s gotten really old
4 years later I’m still pissed about that woman who held her bulldog to my aisle seat and the damn animal just DROOLED all over. LAX to Vancouver is only 1.5 hrs but it felt like 10 hours..
They need to quit horsing around just ban all animals from flights.
I have an emotional support 9mm. It provides quiet companionship, doesn’t pee on things, and I always feel better and more secure when it’s with me. I demand an accommodation!!
If this keeps up, I’ll need to speed up my pet, emotional, support Velociraptor project. Each member of our family needs one.
“The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines service animals in terms of their extensive training”
Service DOGS (”Beginning on March 15, 2011, only dogs are recognized as service animals under titles II and III of the ADA.”)
Service dogs perform a task (guide for blind, seizure warning, medicine, etc) . You can ask what task the dog performs.
Who certifies them and what are the standards?
Any doctor or shrink can write a note to the airline.
It's the same abuse as handicap parking permits.
Emotional support animals are NOT service animals———completely different legal category, and one that I think is hogwash.
.
A woman I know walks around with her dog in one of those baby bjorns.
I did a double take because I expected to see a baby. I also love it when they have dogs in strollers.
Hi. This is my emotional support honey badger.
Correct, emotional support animals don’t perform a task which is what defines service dogs.
What if your M1 Garand gives me emotional support. Can you bring that on your flight? Unloaded I mean.
LOL in a pigs eye. Only the left gets to play, because they make up the rules as they go along.
“Hey!!! What about my emotional support black mamba???”
Hey if we ever fly together you can introduce him to my emotional support mongoose. I’m sure they won’t cause any problems playing together. :)
I agree, but then the airlines also have to improve their treatment of pets who are in their crates and in cargo. So many of them don’t come out alive. :(
In the past, only third world holes around the Equator allowed any animals on commercial or public passenger transportation.
