Hercules, a five year old boxer, saved his family from a roof collapse in their Long Island home after severe snow cause the roof to come crashing down. In the wake of severe snow storms that have struck the New York area, authorities are now urging property owners to clear the snow off their roofs to prevent possible harm and injury.
The event began Saturday night when the normally quiet Hercules began to bark as the Hatzis family slept reports Newsday. His barks alerted the family to ominous cracking sounds from their garage, prompting the family to rescue their car moments before the snow covered roof collapse.
No one was hurt in the event, but the experience was scary for ten-year-old Nick. "I thought it was an earthquake and the whole house was gonna fall down."
As New York prepares for another snow storm this week, the weight of the snow from previous snow storms presents possible danger for New York residents who have not clear the snow off their rooftops.
Meanwhile, Hercules is being hailed as a hero. "Oh my God!" exclaims Nick. "We have the best dog."
Morons. The time to roof rake has been all along, not just now. I’ve been doing it since the first snow storm in December. (M)assachusetts has had over six feet of snow and well over 100 roof collapses around the state. If you’re just doing this now: 1) you’re never going to find a roof rake and 2) you’ve already let too much accumulate and the job is going to be brutal.
People never cease to amaze me.
In fairness, it really depends on how big the house is. I own a two story house with an attic and the roof rake only reaches so high. I’m able to keep my garage and shed roofs clear but can only reach the bottom 2-3 feet of my upper roof with the rake. It helps prevent ice dams but no way am I able to get higher up without putting myself in danger. Fortunately the upper roof has more pitch to it so the snow tends to slide off rather quickly when the sun comes out.
Doggie ping!
So they rushed in under a collapsing roof to save their car? I say they should be made wards of the dog.

If they had been watching TV, then they would have known about Mr Mayhem.
Dogs have guarded us for thousands of years just why I prep for our dog. She’s a Cogi/Samoyed mix, but nothing gets by her. I trust her far more than any electronic alarm.
She sounds like a cute pup.
Boxers are very people oriented and loyal to their families.... Not surprising....
Yes, I know. It was their own fault, and not the hero puppy's. He's a good an excellent boy.

We had a full size boxer when I was 4. It’s head was higher than mine. I hated that dog. It thought I was a toy. I’d run screaming because it was after me and my parents told me to quit playing with the dog. They got rid of Amah when the thing took off a bottom corner of the solid wood front door. Btw, “Amah” means “baby’s nurse”. My parents were real jokers.
In all reality how does one clear snow off a roof, stating that they should is rediculous ...
What this story doesn’t tell you is that the dog was only concerned about its own life, secretly it is plotting to attack it’s owners, it’s just biding its time, trust me, I’ve seen it before. Oh sure be the good doggy right up until they trust you completely then WHAM !!
Once again the dog proves themselves to be the brains of the outfit.
