It’s part of a $51 million project to rebuild Washington-on-the-Brazos, “the birthplace of Texas,” where the declaration that created the Republic of Texas was signed. In 1843, Sam Houston toiled away at a desk in a sixteen-by-sixteen-foot log cabin not far from the muddy banks of the Brazos River. From that makeshift office in Washington-on-the-Brazos, about halfway between Austin and Houston, the then-president of the new Republic of Texas penned letters inviting the chiefs of several Native American tribes to join him for a council meeting. Many of the chiefs came, among them leaders from the Caddo, Delaware, and Shawnee tribes....

WASHINGTON, Wednesday, March 13. CASSIUS M. CLAY will not accept the Spanish Mission. He does not state the reasons for declining the offer, but probably does not desire to leave the country for the present. Neither would he accept the Mexican Mission. Mr. CLAY is a live man and does not desire to ostracise himself during the present crisis of political events in this country. The Spanish Mission is therefore open to some ambitious aspirant. LATER. -- CASSIUS M. CLAY has just consented to accept the Madrid Mission, under the pressure of his friends. Mr. CORWIN, it is understood, will...

=> In February 1836, David Crockett, Jim Bowie, Wm B Travis and a couple hundred 'Texicans' endured a siege to the death at the Alamo. They knew they were all going to die, but they needed to buy Sam Houston time to get better organized over east at San Jacinto. It was the price they were willing to pay for the greater cause. => In some twisted way, that is what the radical left has been doing for their cause ever since election day 2016. They had expected to destroy their enemy LONG before now. Having failed miserably (by the Grace...

On this day in 1836, the Goliad Massacre takes place. Most of you have heard “Remember the Alamo!” Did you know that “Remember Goliad!” was another battle cry used by Texans? The events at Goliad occurred just two short weeks after Texans were defeated at the Alamo. Colonel James Fannin was then at Goliad, building reinforcements around the presidio there. When the Alamo fell, Fannin received orders from Sam Houston to withdraw. But Fannin was in a bit of a bind. Against orders, he had sent some of his soldiers to help with other expeditions. He awaited their return, and...

Hundreds of protesters, some of them armed, gathered at Hermann Park Saturday in an attempt to defend the honor of Sam Houston. Carrying Texas and Confederate flags, participants seemed concerned the park's Sam Houston statue might be removed since the historical figure owned slaves. "Erasing history for the sake of political correctness or to make somebody feel better, it's not just stupid — it's dangerous," said David Amad, an organizer of the demonstration.

The Unanimous Declaration of Independence made by the Delegates of the People of Texas in General Convention at the town of Washington on the 2nd day of March 1836. When a government has ceased to protect the lives, liberty and property of the people, from whom its legitimate powers are derived, and for the advancement of whose happiness it was instituted, and so far from being a guarantee for the enjoyment of those inestimable and inalienable rights, becomes an instrument in the hands of evil rulers for their oppression. Texas State Teachers Association throws support behind Strayhorn BY JOHN REYNOLDS AVALANCHE-JOURNAL Republican turned Independent gubernatorial candidate Carole Keeton Strayhorn picked up the endorsement of the Texas State Teachers Association on Tuesday. The group, however, won't be able to help Strayhorn collect the 45,000-plus signatures that she will need to get on the ballot for the November general election. The TSTA is encouraging all of its members to take part in the party primaries, spokesman Richard Kouri said.
