If you’ve been following the Antifa movement you might have noticed a growing theme of “solidarity” with the Rojava revolution. Key Antifa organizing platforms like It’sGoing Down, Sub.media, Insurrection News, and CrimethInc. routinely share interviews and battle updates and were all instrumental in promoting the launch of the International Revolutionary People’s Guerrilla Force (IRPGF) in May of this year. Additionally, you can find several pictures of foreign guerrilla fighters posing with Antifa flags. These have been widely circulated and often times include the false claim that the fighters pictured are members of ISIS. This is inaccurate. In fact, the fighters...

You’ve probably heard by now that the Syrian Kurds have taken Tal Abyad, the key border town due north of Islamic State’s capital, Raqqa. It’s a huge loss for Islamic State, and a big boost for the Kurds. But it’s something more than that: a glorious victory. That’s not something I get to write very often. Most war stories are the dead opposite of glorious. You start out, as a war-nerdy kid, believing that Gettysburg is the norm—a good clean fight between brave, simple soldiers, ferocious against each other but sparing non-combatants. There was exactly one civilian death at Gettysburg, and...

Syria no longer exists. The tyrannical regime of Bashar al-Assad governs parts of what’s left of it. The psychopathic Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) controls another large swath. Small scraps of territory are ruled by sundry other militias which, more likely than not, will eventually be absorbed by Assad or ISIS. Up north the Kurds have carved out a proto state of their own which they call Rojava. It is being violently squeezed by ISIS from the south, and it’s jammed up against the wall of the Turkish border to the north. It is split into three besieged...
