On July 20, 1993, near Paulabren, Norway, three people fought off a polar bear using two handguns. Paulabren is part of the Svalbard archipelago, under Norwegian administration, north of the arctic circle, south of Longyearbyen. This story was uncovered as part of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request by AmmoLand. The names of the individuals involved were redacted. The original account is a translation. Names have been added to make the report more understandable. The report has been lightly edited for ease in reading. The attack was by a single sow polar bear, on polar researchers in their camp.From...

Baldwin said he pulled the hammer back and released it and the pistol fired without pulling the trigger. The pistol was a replica Pietta, but we don't know now if it had a transfer bar. Assume it doesn't. Has anyone here ever had that happen, or have known that it happened?

An interesting question was raised just the other day as to what have been the greatest law enforcement revolvers. I suppose you could look at it from several different perspectives. You might consider those guns that were the trend setters or you might tally up the guns that have had the highest production numbers. Or, you might just go with your favorites. And I suppose that there is nothing wrong with any of that. When I first put on the badge of a Texas peace officer, the revolver was king. So I have a bit more than just academic interest...

Are revolvers ideal or out-dated for personal defense? Not many gun enthusiasts debate this, they rather speak of comparison between 9mm vs .45 but its still worth a discussion. Chris Baker from Lucky Gunner asked that question a while back and came up with some really good points about revolvers while attending a defensive revolver training class. The class was conducted by Darryl Bolke and Wayne Dobbs of Hardwired Tactical. Other instructors to help lighten the teaching load were Chuck Haggard and Claude Werner. Each instructors taught different topics related to the defensive use of revolvers. Some of the sentiments...

The Pistola Con Caricato Revolver A break-action weapon, the Pistola con Caricato features three barrels, complimented by a very high capacity 18-shot cylinder, which is reloaded via two-piece moon clip-type loading devices. They sandwich the 18 rounds between a holding plate and a firing access plate, through which the firing pins strike the cartridges. The weapon has five operational settings, and the selector allows the shooter to choose which firing pin and barrel would be used to fire the gun. It also has the option to fire from all three barrels at once with one pull of the trigger....

A Wisconsin company is giving every employee a handgun for Christmas. The company, BenShot, sells novelty glassware with bullets embedded, according to the Appleton Post-Crescent. The gift idea is part of an effort to promote personal safety and team building, owner Ben Wolfgram told the newspaper. “For us, now, we have an entire armed staff,” he said. “I think that’s pretty good.” All 16 full-time employees will be able to pick their choice of revolver. Wolfgram said most employees, including some who had never shot a gun, were excited about the company's announcement. Wolfgram said at least two employees initially...

Gun sales nationwide has been on the downside lately. Self-defense however, is still a hot topic for many consumers. Concealed carry firearms are still some of the most searched weapons on the Internet and hammerless revolvers are right up there near the top. Some gun enthusiasts hate them and some love them for self-defense and the ease of use. If personal protection and easy operation of the gun is what you’re into, having a revolver is a great option. The small frame is ideal for concealed carry. They can be carried hidden in numerous ways on the body without any...

In this modern day gun world the semi-auto pistols have a huge hold of the market for self-defense guns. But concealed carry revolvers can still hold their own for personal defense. Revolvers can be a strong choice for concealed carry, as they're reliable and easy to use. Not everyone is a fan of a small semi-auto for concealed carry. However, there is a large fan base of shooters that will only look to revolvers for concealed carry. If you’re in this group and interested in carrying a revolver for CCW, read on of the pros and con and see our...

The prevailing sentiment…was that the revolver are kind of like the everyman gun. It should be the go-to firearm for the average civilian who wants something for personal protection and semi-autos are probably best reserved for more dedicated shooters. From Youtuber Lucky Gun, he is quick to point out, that the revolver is not without its flaws. "It never ceases to amaze me just how many people are under the impression that revolvers are incapable of malfunctioning." The fact of the matter is that even though revolvers can be very reliable, they're also prone to some pretty serious issues that...

Are revolvers ideal or obsolete? This is somewhat less argued a question than the age old comparison of 9mm v .45 but still worthy of discussion. Lucky Gunner (Chris Baker) asked that question a couple weeks ago and we figured we’d share this with you. Short excerpt from the video: "The prevailing sentiment…was that the revolver are kind of like the every man gun. It should be the go-to firearm for the average civilian who wants something for personal protection and semi-autos are probably best reserved for more dedicated shooters. These two perspectives might seem pretty incompatible on the surface,...

The iconic Colt 1847 Walker Revolver was the game changer of the old west. Ian from Forgotten Weapons takes a look at an authentic Colt 1847 Walker Revolver, perhaps best known today as Clint Eastwood’s weapon in The Outlaw Josey Wales. Did you know that this massive cap-and-ball revolver was the most powerful revolver until the modern .357 Magnum cartridge was invented? That truth is certainly quite impressive. At the time, the Colt 1847 Walker Revolver would have been unlike anything ever experienced before. The massive .44 caliber revolver was meant for taking out mounted opponents on horseback, or the...

On April 11, 1986 eight FBI agents engaged in a lead slinging war with two criminals, and despite outnumbering the crooks by four-to-one, ended up losing two of their own in a debacle that changed both tactics and the choices of firearms for law enforcement as a whole. Michael Platt and William Matix were no good, despite not having a criminal record before they began their crime spree that ended their careers and lives. The two met while serving in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Matix having been a former Marine before enlisting in the Army. Platt was a Ranger. Strangely enough,...

___________________________________________________ Please help to ID my "new" weapon. Backstory: I recently received this beautiful Colt's revolver as an early inheritance from my mother's estate. The accepted mythology is this: My stepfather was a navigator on a B-17 and later a B-24 and it is known that he was crew on USAAF battle missions over Jap held islands in the Pacific - throughout the entire Pacific War. What is less known is a little more about this issued firearm. There is no stamping of caliber anywhere on the pistol. On the top of the barrel is a rather careless stamping...

There is not much the government can do about the sort of terrorist threat that President Obama described in his speech on Sunday. It will always be difficult to stop self-radicalized jihadists, operating under no one's instructions, from carrying out attacks on soft targets too scattered and numerous to secure. The only viable alternative, self-help, is one that Obama seems ideologically incapable of considering. His proposals for new restrictions on firearms move in the opposite direction, based on the assumption that the problem is too many guns in too many hands. Gun control supporters generally dismiss the notion that armed...
  • Why do they call it a .38 when it's actually a .357 ?

    08/08/2015 8:51:17 PM PDT · by virgil283 · 34 replies
"The early cartridge revolvers were simply modified cap and ball designs with the chambers drilled through so you could load from the breech end, The bullet must go inside the case, and the case must go inside the chamber. So the dimensional relationship between bullet, chamber and barrel is now out of whack. If the bullet was to fit inside the case, it would have to have a smaller diameter than the bore, and that wouldn't work. This problem was temporarily solved by using what were called "heeled" bullets (see below).
