Eyebrows were raised when newly elected Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-La.) in his first address from the chair reminded the assembled Democratic and Republican members of the House of Representatives that the God of the Bible raised up each one of them for a purpose.“I want to tell all my colleagues here what I told the Republicans in that room last night: I don’t believe there are any coincidences in a matter like this. I believe that scripture, the Bible, is very clear that God is the one that raises up those in authority. He raised up each...

Some find it strange, even slightly naughty, that I shut off the news after the elections of November 2020. My experience has taught me otherwise. Having no longer handed my mind over to the distant, impersonal forces that seek to occupy it, I have abandoned my anger and discovered the world anew in front of my eyes, thanks to prayer. I started praying all fifteen decades of the Rosary (you’ll pardon me if I am old-fashioned) back when Pope Francis made this request in October 2018. Things already seemed bleak enough back then to merit it. Now, the Rosary is...

The five-year-old boy who police say was thrown from the third level of the Mall of America is now 'alert and conscious,' according to a family representative. Stephen Tillitt read a statement from the family in a phone conference with the media Friday afternoon. "All praise and glory and honor to Jesus," read Stephen Tillitt, the representative. "He saved our son’s life and is healing him in the most miraculous ways." The boy is no longer in critical condition, but will face future surgeries. "We are now turning our focus to additional surgeries, healing, rehabilitation and eventually a return home,...

When the Clay-Chalkville High School graduation ceremony stopped briefly for a medical emergency in the stands, graduate Christian Crawford spontaneously took to the microphone to pray for the person receiving treatment. Crawford told the crowd that he didn’t know what was going on, but he wanted to pray. The young man’s powerful prayer brought cheers from the crowd on hand. The ceremony resumed shortly after the prayer. Check out the video below to see Crawford’s prayer.

  • Atheist Hitchens: Prayers 'Touching'

The author of God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything says it is "touching" that many Christians are praying for his healing, both body and soul. Iconoclastic atheist Christopher Hitchens, whose columns appear in the Chicago Sun-Times, has been stricken with esophageal cancer, a disease that leaves few survivors. Conservative Catholic writer Thomas Peters has challenged readers of the American Papist website to join him in praying one Hail Mary a day on behalf of Hitchens for salvation and that "God will be with him at the hour of his death." Hitchens told evangelical broadcaster Hugh Hewitt that he...

  • God wants us to pray for our new president elect

Now is the time for all men and women of goodwill to commit to praying for the president elect. God is still in control. Maybe he has humbled us. Maybe he has decided that we are too proud, too selfish, too...whatever. Yes, it's going to be hard, but this is a good test of our character. Will we respond with hatred, bitterness, and despair, or with the eternal hope that our God is in control? We have a choice. If you don't think that God can use a man like Obama, then your God is much too small. Remember -...

“God is still at work in the earthquake zone,” Southern Baptist representative Josie Gabdon* writes, recounting: “Some co-workers have seen a miracle! A young woman, a wife and mother, had not gotten out of bed since the earthquake! She was so depressed over her loss that her family had to take her load. In desperation, her husband found our friends -– relief volunteers -– and begged them to come to his home and pray for his wife. The next morning, the husband came bounding down the mountain with a huge smile on his face. ‘My wife got up, cooked breakfast...

CLEARWATER, Fla. (BP)--Mary Schindler says it has been a mother’s intuition that has kept her off the rollercoaster of emotions surrounding her disabled daughter’s case. “I knew Judge Greer was going to turn the motions down,” Schindler told the Florida Baptist Witness March 11. “He’s never done anything to help us before.” Schindler and her husband, Bob, are the parents of Terri Schiavo, the 41-year-old brain-damaged woman at the center of a debate over what some say is the most definitive case yet for legalized euthanasia in the United States. Terri's problems began in 1990, when she suffered brain damage...

My mother in law has been ill for several weeks now and last Tuesday she was admitted to the hospital for intestinal bleeding. Three nights ago we almost lost her when a section of her small intestine burst. She has gone through four hours of surgery and is now hooked to a ventilator and heavily medicated. Things are touch and go at the moment. She is like a mother to me and she is the kindest soul that I have ever met. A huge Buckeye fan, I know she would want us to root for her team, even when she...

There was once a man who enjoyed hunting. He especially enjoyed hunting bears. One day, this bear hunter was out doing what bear hunters do, when he saw exactly what bear hunters like to see: a big, fat, vicious, furry bear. The bear hunter raised his trusty gun and fired. Well, it turns out that the bear hunter's trusty gun wasn't quite so trusty as he had once thought. The bear, being smarter than average, realized what this little man was trying to do. The bear hunter, realizing that the bear was aware of his small and edible presence, immediately...

Tonight at my university Catholic Center, I presided over a Prayer Service for the Men and Women of our Military and their families. Our opening hymn was "How Great Thou Art," followed by an opening prayer, Ecclesiastes 3:1-12, a Sung version of Psalm 23, and Romans 14:7-13, 18-19, 22. After the readings, a soldier's recollection of Fr. Emil J. Kapaun, a Korean War Martyr. Then sang "How Can I keep From Singing," then lifted up Intercessions, followed by a silent reflection. Then sang "Jesus, Give Us Strength," read Psalm 34. We then read the names of all the fallen soldiers...

Let us not forget to pray. You are about to read excerpts of a call to prayer by one of the most remarkable Generals of our time, General Patton.   This call to prayer has never rung any truer than it has today in lieu of recent events. The photo to the right was taken by Patton's wife, Beatrice Ayer Patton.   The following is an excerpt between General Patton and the Chief Chaplain in 1944 which took place shortly before the glorious Battle of the Bulge. "Chaplain, sit down for a moment; I want to talk to you about this business...
