The international community is na ve to believe that Palestinian Chairman Yasser Arafat will independently relinquish control over the terror groups and the Palestinian security forces, Foreign minister Silvan Shalom said Thursday. Israel and the United State have called for the unification of the Palestinian security forces and it is one of the Palestinian's obligations under the US-backed road map peace plan. "The international community does not understand Arafat's mentality or that of the Middle East," Shalom said. "To ask him to relinquish control over the [PA] finances, security forces and the terror organizations is like asking him to jump...

Mon September 15, 2003 04:25 PM ET WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration said on Monday it planned to withhold some funds from Israel because of its settlement activities in Palestinian areas. The deductions would come from a $9 billion package of U.S. loan guarantees to help Israel weather a deep recession and fiscal crisis. But administration officials said they have yet to decide whether to penalize Israel for building a fence through the West Bank. Congressional aides doubted the White House would carry out that threat. Under legislation authorizing the loan guarantees, the United States would deduct from the...

It has been 10 years since the Jewish state made its largest-ever diplomatic gamble, and the storms it generated have yet to abate. In fact, as a diverse group of writers collectively attest in this edition, the stakes today are much higher than they were back when Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres took the fateful decision to recognize the PLO, allow its entry into Israeli-held land, and set in motion a mechanism that would potentially lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state. In a country famous for responding to international situations rather than creating them, the move made at...

Speaking hours before Hamas began its Tuesday murder spree, Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Moshe Ya'alon said he ordered the air force to use insufficient force to carry out its mission of bombing the Hamas leadership during its meeting in Gaza on Saturday. Ya'alon explained that he had purposely caused the mission of decapitating the Hamas leadership to fail, because he wished to avoid killing "innocent civilians." Not surprisingly, the anemic strike did not deter Hamas. Ahmed Yassin immediately called for revenge. And so it was that the innocent civilians who were killed were not Palestinians who were acting as...

September 10, 2003 – Instead of placing the ring on the finger of his beloved, 20-year-old Hanan Sand reverently laid the gold band on the shrouded body of his fiancee Nava Appelbaum as she was buried this morning. The guests who should have been getting ready to take part in the Appelbaum-Sand simcha tonight, rushed instead to attend the funerals of Nava and her father, Dr. David Appelbaum, this morning – less than twelve hours after they were murdered as they were getting out of their car for a father/daughter coffee date the night before the wedding. The depth of...

Arutz-7's Ariel Kahane asked Housing Minister Effie Eitam of the National Religious Party, "I admit, I have no real question; is there anything left to say that we haven't yet said, anything left to think that we haven't yet thought?" Eitam responded, "Perhaps what there is left to say is that the government seems to finally be open to the realization that we are facing a monster of a terrorist infrastructure that is totally dedicated to destroying our country... It is precisely for times like these that we have a state, and an army, and a national leadership, and I...
