The American Center in Jerusalem was one of the many places that the tragedy of September 11, 2001, was commemorated in Israel on Thursday, the second anniversary of the attack.
In conjunction with the Ministry of Education, schools throughout Jerusalem were invited to a screening of the documentary In Memoriam, New York City 9/11/01, with Rudolph W. Giuliani.
The documentary was an HBO special featuring extensive footage of the attack on the World Trade Center and its aftermath.
Students from five schools from the Ma'aleh Adumim area attended this event and were asked to share their thoughts on the video.
According to Galia Mazor, one of the representatives of the Shinhar-Kremnitzer Office for the Advancement of Judaism, Zionism, Democracy and Education to Citizenship in the Ministry of Education, the video was shown to highlight the connection between Israel and the US. "No one can empathize with the US like the Jewish nation can."
The most commonly expressed feeling was of disbelief when students first heard of the attack and the inability to truly grasp its implications.
Many students commented that the pictures in the video were all too similar to the ones from the scenes piguim (terrorist attacks) that can be seen on Israeli television with unfortunate frequency.
"Just like Giuliani went to three funerals a week, there was a time when my brothers were doing the same thing here," said one boy.
