WASHINGTON — A different kind of gridlock is headed to a key section of the nation’s capital. DC Councilman Charles Allen (D-Ward 6) on Sunday warned his constituents in the Navy Yard area to brace for “major congestion” starting Monday, when thousands of naval employees begin returning to in-person work there. “Requiring all in-person work without helping agencies plan = mess,” Allen wrote on X. “16,000+ employees all report in person. Expecting 8-10,000 cars, but have 4,473 parking spots. “Avoid area if you can.” Allen cited data from a memo he apparently received, though it’s not entirely clear from where...

The controversy surrounding President Trump’s upcoming rally in Albuquerque exposes New Mexico’s state leadership selectively blocking access to public spaces, sparking heated allegations of partisanship. Scheduled for Thursday at CSI Aviation, the rally faced logistical challenges when far-left Democrat New Mexico Commissioner of Public Lands Stephanie Garcia Richard rejected the Trump campaign’s plan to use the Isleta Amphitheater’s parking lot. After the Trump campaign coordinated with Live Nation to set up a parking and shuttle system, the state abruptly reversed course, blocking the use of the state-owned lot. This move is irrefutably politically motivated and, at its core, an infringement...

Picture this: a bright yellow contraption adheres to your windshield like a determined barnacle on a ship’s hull. But this isn’t marine life—it’s the Barnacle, a high-tech parking deterrent that’s turning heads (and immobilizing wheels). With suction cups boasting a whopping 1,000 lbs of force, it secures itself to your car, rendering any escape futile. No more clunky wheel clamps; the Barnacle is sleek, efficient, and, dare I say, oddly captivating. But fear not—there’s a QR code escape hatch for those who’ve crossed the parking law abyss. Welcome to the future of parking enforcement!

Hundreds of employees at Wyoming’s largest ski resort had finagled a way to park for free (regular rates $35 - $45 per day) until a popular Jackson cartoonist accidentally exposed the hack. Now the free ride is over and so too, perhaps, the love affair with the artist. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Parking lots at Teton Village fill up fast even at $35-$45 dollars a day. Because Jackson Hole Mountain Resort workers are required to pay for parking, they've been exploiting a hack to park free — until a local cartoonist outed the hack. Underground Parking at the Palazzo At the 2024 SHOT Show, there was a significant change which was not widely announced. No more free self parking at the Venetian and Palazzo hotels, part of the Convention Center. For years, perhaps decades, the parking at the Venetian and Pallazzo was free. Parking is always something to be considered in busy downtown Las Vegas. When this correspondent first learned of the free parking, it was a tremendous improvement in covering the SHOT Show. From the free parking in the underground of the Palazzo, it wasn't far to an elevator which delivered you to...

Parking garages across the US could be at risk of collapse over the weight of heavier electric vehicles, experts warned, as one such garage fell in Lower Manhattan, killing one person and injuring five. Chris Whapples, a structural engineer and consultant working on new regulations for multi-story garages in the UK, said officials need to understand how the rise in EVs will affect current car parks. “I don’t want to be too alarmist, but there definitely is the potential for some of the early car parks in poor condition to collapse,” Whapples told The Telegraph. “Operators need to be aware...

Multi-storey and underground car parks could collapse under the weight of electric vehicles, engineers have warned. Electric cars, which are roughly twice as heavy as standard models, could cause ‘catastrophic’ damage, according to the British Parking Association (BPA), which wants local authorities to conduct urgent structural surveys. Most of the nation’s 6,000 multi-storey and underground facilities were built according to guidance based on the weight of popular cars of 1976, including the Mk 3 Ford Cortina. But the electric cars currently on the UK market are far bulkier. For instance, the best-selling Tesla Model 3 weighs 2.2 tons fully loaded,...

WASHINGTON, D.C.—A new report filed by the U.S. Department of Transportation finds that each and every time a motorist gets excited about a perfect parking spot at the front of a parking lot it turns out to be a "friggin' motorcycle." "Hey, here's one—GAH! A FRIGGIN' MOTORCYCLE!" shouted Norman Dodgson, a volunteer who agreed to drive with researchers for six months. "I hate this! I DON'T WANT TO LIVE ANYMORE!" The phenomenon—dubbed "Interstitial Motor Mirage" by researchers—occurs in crowded parking lots when drivers are most desperate for a space. Because motorcycles don't sit back in a space as far as...

California has been on the cutting edge of social policy for decades now. We were defunding the police before it became cool!We didn’t exactly take money out of law enforcement budgets until recently, but we “defunded” them by taking away their ability to make arrests, protect citizens and maintain peace. Some people still don’t believe this, but Prop 47 is a law — deceptively titled ‘Safe Schools and Neighborhoods Act’ — that reduces many felonies to misdemeanors and provides for the early release of certain violent offenders and sex offenders. One of the most unbelievable provisions of Prop 47 is one...

Want a painting of President Trump in your parking space? So be it. That's what a federal judge ruled Friday after a Louisiana teen's portrait of Trump sparked a brouhaha at his school, the Times-Picayune reports. "The painting of President Trump cannot reasonably be described as obscene or plainly offensive on its face, nor can it be construed as school-sponsored speech," US District Judge Eldon Fallon wrote, calling the Trump portrait a type of "pure political speech" the school can't prevent. The student, Ned Thomas, had the portrait commissioned after Pine Junior-Senior High School near Franklinton offered seniors the chance...

A new proposal on the docket in Boston on Wednesday could determine how much residents pay for parking tickets. The Boston City Council was to meet at noon Wednesday to discuss new legislation which will include a hearing order for potential income-adjusted fines on parking violations. Recently elected city councilor at-large Julia Mejia filed the hearing order on Monday and has been vocal about the idea on Twitter. "I am introducing legislation on income-adjusting parking tickets so low-income families don’t have to decide between paying a parking ticket or putting food on their table," she wrote.

Cindi Eckis doesn’t have a smartphone, and she doesn’t want one. “It makes my life simpler,” the Cheektowaga retiree said. But sticking with her flip phone will make it tougher for her and other low-tech motorists to find a place to park along some streets of downtown Buffalo. A new parking policy being rolled out by city officials adds parking zones where the only way to pay to park is through the Buffalo Roam parking app. Blue "Pay by app only" signs went up earlier this week on Cobblestone District streets. "Pay from your phone," the signs read. "Download Buffalo...

Commuters who live in western Prince William and Fauquier counties can leave the driving to someone else come Dec. 17 when a new bus begins round-trip service from Haymarket to Arlington. The “OmniRide Haymarket Express” will make four trips in the morning and four return trips in the afternoon and early evening. It will run along I-66 between Haymarket and the Rosslyn Metro station. The trips will originate from the new park-and-ride lot on the northeast corner of U.S. 15 and Interstate 66. The Monday-through Friday service is meant to give workers an alternative to traveling by car. It’s the...

It sounds like something straight out of a sci-fi movie, but Colorado has been named one of 10 finalists for the Hyperloop One competition, which could end with a vacuum-sealed tunnel shooting people from Cheyenne to Pueblo and Vail to Denver at speeds up to 700 miles per hour. The futuristic, pod-based transportation system for Colorado could cost as much as $24 billion, but it's only one of a number of major developments in the realm of transportation throughout 2017. The proposed route for a Colorado Hyperloop accounts for roughly 360 miles total, and the Los Angeles firm that's sponsoring...

No city can kick you in the teeth quite like Boston. I thought I’d lived and worked here long enough to know how to avoid it. A man gets careless from time to time. I found myself driving to work yesterday instead of taking the MBTA because of the mega-arctic cold freeze. Traffic was light and I found a spot opposite the convention center. It was about 7:45 a.m. Summer Street, in winter, is transformed from a popular access road between downtown and the Seaport District into a nuclear-level wind tunnel, blasting icy air toward the harbor. It was hellacious. Officially...
