Jefferson City, MO (LifeNews.com) -- Despite the fact that there are enough pro-life legislators in Missouri to override his vetoes, Governor Bob Holden called them hypocrites for supporting restrictions on abortion while loosening restrictions on business and agriculture. Speaking Tuesday to 150 attendees at a pro-abortion rally, Holden pledged to veto any pro-life legislation -- even though his veto last session of a law requiring a 24 hour waiting period before an abortion was overridden by legislators from both parties. Holden referred to Republican legislators' attempts to reduce the government burden on business and agriculture, and criticized the fact that...

JEFFERSON CITY - When Missouri Gov. Bob Holden walked into the House chamber to give his State of the State message Wednesday, lawmakers gave him a polite standing ovation.

But by the time Holden, a Democrat, was halfway into his address, Republicans were no longer clapping. And politeness had gone by the wayside.

Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., the top corporate player in Missouri politics, is no longer backing Gov. Bob Holden - in large part because of their differences over concealed weapons.

Republican and Democratic sources say the brewery's decision not to support the governor's re-election next year is highly unusual in light of its long-standing reputation as a donor which gives generously to both parties and their candidates, regardless of their views.

More than 60,000 Missourians are expected to apply for permits for concealed guns beginning Oct. 11. And because training is a prerequisite, the expected rush for the right to bear hidden firearms could put tremendous pressure on Missouri's firearms instructors. Experience elsewhere suggests there will be an influx of applicants immediately after Missouri's concealed-gun law takes effect -- much like the crunch to get playoff tickets to a professional sporting event. Missourians already are getting on lists for training courses needed to qualify for concealed-gun permits. "We've already started a list of people who want to be put in a...

CCRKBA: St. Louis CarJackings, Murder Proof that Gov. Holden Wrong to Veto Concealed Carry 8/11/03 4:24:00 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To: State Desk Contact: Alan Gottlieb of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, 425-454-4911 web: http://www.ccrkba.org BELLEVUE, Wash., Aug. 11 /U.S. Newswire/ -- A violent string of carjackings and a murder over the weekend in St. Louis are ample proof that Gov. Bob Holden's recent veto of legislation that would have enabled Missouri residents to defend themselves against armed criminals was a terrible mistake that must be resolved by the legislature in September. That was the...

JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri (AP) -- Some people began using the acronym shortly after Democratic Gov. Bob Holden went into debt with a $1 million inaugural party. Soon, opponents were chanting it at Capitol rallies.

Feel free to send a sympathy card to us political correspondents who aren't based in recall-frenzied California for the looniest political story in decades. To be sure, Missouri is no California. And while nothing will match the Gray Davis fiasco, I'm starting to think the Missouri governor's race may be a decent consolation prize. On Thursday, a grizzled Kansas City political operative with ties to Democrat Claire McCaskill showed up bearing an intriguing gift -- a statewide Missouri governor's race poll. The survey compared Democratic Gov. Bob Holden with McCaskill, the state auditor and his potential primary challenger. And the...

WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. (AP) - Gov. Bob Holden vetoed a concealed weapons bill Thursday, but the sponsor of the legislation remained confident it will become law.Holden signed the veto in suburban St. Louis - an area of the state that played a big role in defeating 1999's Proposition B, a ballot measure that would have allowed Missourians to carry concealed guns. Seventy-eight percent of the voters in this community voted against it."You and I clearly agree putting more guns in people's hands does not reduce crime,'' Holden said over catcalls from about one dozen pro-gun protesters. At one point they...

FELLOW MISSOURI CITIZENS: As you may know, a very highly-refined CCW bill passed both houses of the Missouri legislature earlier this year, against threats by Governor "One-Term Bob" Holden to veto it. To date, he has not done so. However, he must shortly take action on the bill one way or another, or it will pass into law. According to the Governor's office, he has only until July 14th to veto it. Of course, action on his part could come at any time. IT'S MAJOR CRUNCH TIME. IT'S TIME FOR GOV. HOLDEN TO HEAR FROM YOU AND ALL IN MISSOURI...

Here's the latest on what's going on in Jefferson City. As always, I welcome your comments! Annie ************************************************************************************* Governor Holden's Veto Threats Unprecedented JEFFERSON CITY - It has been almost a century since a Missouri Governor has vetoed a budget bill in its entirety. In 1907, Governor Joseph Windgate Folk vetoed an entire budget bill, not due to spending reductions, but because it was improperly enrolled. This year Governor Holden has already committed the unprecedented act of vetoing three complete budget bills, and he warns there are more vetoes to come. "Governor Holden has abdicated his responsibilities as chief executive...

Sent: Friday, May 30, 2003 8:46 AM Subject: "NO NEW TAXES" Rally Dear Missouri Republican Activist, As you know, President George W. Bush just passed the third largest tax cut in the history of the United States. This tax relief will stimulate the economy and help working families by increasing the child tax credit, eliminating the marriage penalty tax and encouraging employers to invest in workers and equipment. President Bush has been a constant and effective champion of the taxpayer. Unfortunately, in Missouri, our governor is desperate to raise our taxes. In fact, Bob Holden would like to pass the...

Holden calls special session Vetoes health budget provisions, more vetoes may be coming By BOB WATSON News Tribune Missouri lawmakers will return to Jefferson City for a special session, but Gov. Bob Holden doesn't know the date yet. He didn't say what specifically would be in the call, because he's decided so far to veto only one of the 18 budget bills lawmakers approved 10 days ago. Flanked by parents and some children who receive services from the Health and Mental Health departments, Holden this morning said he would veto the budget bill that funds those two departments. "We're not...

On May 5 the Missouri legislature overwhelmingly passed right-to-carry legislation, which will allow honest adults age 23 and older to obtain a permit to carry a concealed firearm. Right-to-carry means that if you fulfill the requirements (training, fingerprints, no criminal record, pay the fee, etc.) you will be issued the permit. You cannot be denied just because the sheriff doesn't like you for supporting his opponent - or thinks only police should be able to protect themselves, as occurs in states with discriminatory concealed carry, like New York and New Jersey. Gov. Holden has threatened to veto this bill.

Gov. Bob Holden said Thursday that his administration made ``the right decision'' in suddenly pulling down Confederate battle flags that had flown for years without controversy at two Missouri historic sites. The Democratic governor also said he sees no need to meet with representatives of Southern heritage groups pressing for a compromise to restore the flags over a Confederate cemetery and a Civil War fort.
