Governor says the strong growth in state tax revenue shows that Missouri has enough in its budget to cover service expenditures.
JEFFERSON CITY - Acknowledging strong growth in state tax revenue, Gov. Bob Holden released on Friday the remaining $43 million he had withheld from state agencies because of concerns the state budget was unbalanced.

Holden needs to tell Senator Kerry that the economy is improving here in Missouri so don't expect our 11 electorial votes come November.

Also included is money that had been withheld from the "alternatives to abortion" program, which provides financial aid to pregnant women as a way of discouraging abortions.Interesting, huh?

Interesting, huh? Many interesting issues involved here. Imagine if a Republican governor held back state money that goes for abortions. The Left and their allies at the Post-Disgrace would be wanting his/her head on a plate.
Also, our school district here in St. Louis County had a tax increase on the ballot early in April. They made it sound like the schools would be shut down if they didn't get it. I hate to say it barely passed but passed none the less increasing our personal property tax 35%. After the vote Holden is releasing all kinds of money. I can't wait to vote him out of office.

Missouri is schizo, like the nation as a whole. This _should_ be a conservative place, but when you throw in all the danged elitists and moocher votes from the urban areas, and the few New Deal liberals and their uninformed offspring statewide, MO is going down the tubes. Holden is an absolute joke.
MO has had some good governors in recent memory: Senator Kit Bond and Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft.

This _should_ be a conservative place, I think over all this state is. We have a number of conservative democrats still around and as time goes on they'll be leaving the Democratic party.

Missouri is schizo, like the nation as a whole.Actually, I think that the famous blue-red, county-by-county post-election map from November 2000 tells the tale pretty clearly. Democrat votes are concentrated in the major parasite nests (cities) while Republicans own the great expanses of traditional, working America. Ultimately, all national and statewide elections are decided by two factors:
1. Turnout in the parasite nests, and
2. The number of morons out there in traditional America who, inexplicably, decide to vote along with the parasites.
The Democrats certainly understand this and so they cajole the homeless with cigarettes (St. Louis) and get their mindless trade-union Rockys to go and wake up as many "oppressed minority victims" as possible and mule them from their row-home neighborhoods to the polling places on election day. Add to that the "absentee" ballots from various nursing-home dementia wards, group homes, prisons, and cemeteries, and voila! - - turnout.
Conning some of the women out in traditional America to vote along with the parasites is pretty simple, too - - the Democrats just play to their greed and selfishness by inferring that there's all kinds of free stuff coming their way (health-care, day-care, all-day kindergarden, etc.) and it will all be paid for by confiscation of more taxes.... from their NEIGHBORS.

The economy is strong in Missouri despite his attempts to scuttle it. We would be in a deep depression right now if he would have gotten his budget proposals through.

I think Holden gets a lot of his marching orders from the socialist, Dick Gephardt. So what you say makes sense. I just don't see how Holden can get re-elected. Our state seems to be one of the few that isn't moving farther to the left.

Listen! A dead man is talking! (politically I mean, of course, we're gonna knock this guy's block off in Nov.)

Just think. Matt Blunt as governor and Roy Blunt, his father, as majority whip. It pays to have connections to people in high places.

Yup, you have got it about right. But if it were only the parasite votes, there would not be a big problem. Those are understandable. The real sickness is the liberal/elitist vote.

I'm reading the responses, and so far no one posed the following questions: How can the governor "withhold" money as if he has a pile in his office? Maybe it is in a lockbox? Is it in his "state budget" checkbook or is it like an S&L passbook savings ledger? Can the gov write out checks? And does his hand tire from signing the little line at the lower right?
The money already has been spent. The new spending spree will have to come out in the wash at the end of the year, or they will raise taxes, fees, or bonds to offset the diff.. Watch around Nov-Dec, the politicians will say there was a budget shortfall if they spent too much, or they will say there are new projects in the works to cover the budget surplus (they did not spend enough).
