A preliminary injunction could be a boon for college athletes. A federal judge ruled on Friday that the NCAA cannot enforce its name, image and likeness rules that block student-athletes from negotiating deals with boosters. The ruling would allow those athletes in the recruiting process or in the transfer portal to negotiate NIL deals without breaking NCAA rules. Judge Clifton Corker wrote on Friday that “the NCAA’s prohibition likely violates federal antitrust law and harms student-athletes.” “While the NCAA permits student-athletes to profit from their NIL, it fails to show how the timing of when a student-athlete enters such an...

Laguna Beach (Calif.) High School senior Bella Rasmussen has agreed to a name, image and likeness deal with KeyWise to promote its newly released KeyWise Skye app, which acts as a fitness tracker for your brain. As reported by On3, the agreement, announced Tuesday, was facilitated by MarketPryce and is believed to be the first NIL agreement for a female football player. It's not the first history-making moment for Rasmussen this fall. Nine weeks earlier, on Oct. 14, she made California high school history when she became the first girl to score two touchdowns in a varsity football game. The scores...

She was an all-American in her freshman year and made the Southeastern Conference’s honor roll as a sophomore majoring in interdisciplinary studies. Ahead of the start of her junior season, Dunne is also at the leading edge of a movement shaking the old foundations of college sports: a female student athlete raking in cash thanks to the passage in 2021 of new rules allowing college athletes to sign name, image and likeness, or N.I.L., deals.

Decoldest Crawford has one of the best names in college football history. Maybe sports history. Thanks to the NIL rules that were implemented last season, he can now profit off his great name. A few weeks ago SOS Heating & Cooling in Omaha, Nebraska announced that it had signed the incoming Nebraska freshman wide receiver as a spokesperson and everyone agreed that made perfect sense. Now we have the actual ad and it is delightful. Perfect. Just a straightforward ad read by a young man with a thick Lousiana accent. And this is sure to be the most famous regional...

..........The amount owed to each athlete would be the half of the sport’s total revenue minus the team’s total student grant-in-aid package divided by the number of players. For instance, each USC football player could make upwards of $200,000 a year. Think about taking $15 million to $20 million that currently has been used to reinvest in football resources and to fund the rest of the athletic department and transferring it to football players, and it’s easy to see why administrators are getting ready for a fight.

Last summer, Quinn Ewers was a highly-rated senior quarterback at Southlake Carroll High in Texas who signed a deal with GT Sports Marketing for $1.4 million. But the governing body of Texas high schools ruled he would forfeit his high school eligibility if he signed the deal. So Ewers graduated early and enrolled at Ohio State in order to get the money. He spent last season on the Buckeyes roster and has since transferred to the University of Texas. As for Gallagher at Laurel Highlands, he has decided to play football in college and is considering Pitt, Penn State, West...

The Dallas Cowboys have placed the exclusive franchise tag on quarterback Dak Prescott, meaning no other team can sign him in free agency. Sources told ESPN, NFL Network and the Dallas Morning News of the move Monday. The Cowboys can still negotiate for a long-term contract with Prescott. Prescott, 26, completed 65.1 percent of his throws for a career-high 4,902 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 16 starts last season. The two-time Pro Bowl selection hasn't missed a start since being picked in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. The Cowboys had until 11:59 a.m. EDT to...

Eric Reid, who was first to join Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protest last year, will not be continuing that gesture this season. “When we started doing that, our goal was to open up the floor to conversation. I believe we’ve achieved that goal,” Reid said Wednesday at 49ers minicamp. “So now we just want to move forward and just partner with people that want to make a change.” Unlike Kaepernick, Reid still plays for the 49ers and he is miffed that the polarizing quarterback remains unemployed after opting out of his contract nearly two months ago. Reid believes Kaepernick’s status...
