In a bizarre and revealing interview, Lakeshia Mashonda Ruddi Alston, the niqab-wearing Muslim woman running as the sole Republican candidate for North Carolina’s State Senate District 22, delivered a series of rambling and contradictory statements that have only intensified suspicions of her true intentions. Alston, who has a documented history of voting Democrat since at least 2008, insists she’s a genuine Republican representing the party’s future. But her interview responses, filled with odd declarations, have left many questioning whether this is a deliberate attempt to sabotage the GOP primary. Alston, a self-described educator, entrepreneur, and community advocate with no prior...

Pete Brunstetter, of Winston-Salem, both plan to run against Sen. Phil Berger, of Eden, the current Senate Republican leader. Berger is seeking a third term in the post. The GOP caucus is scheduled to meet and vote on their leadership team on Sunday, Dec. 7 in Greensboro. RALEIGH, N.C. -- A state lawmaker whose son died when a woman sped past the lowered arm and flashing lights of a stopped school bus introduced legislation Wednesday to toughen the penalty for the crime. A bill introduced by Rep. Dale Folwell, R-Forsyth, would make passing a stopped school bus a higher level misdemeanor. Striking someone after passing the bus would become a felony. The bill was among more than 90 introduced Wednesday, a key deadline for filing bills that do not generate or require revenue. Bills not introduced by Wednesday will have a difficult time being considered before the...

(snip)In January 2003, Decker, who was among the furthest right (barf) Republicans, switched his registration to Democratic and announced he would vote for Black for speaker. That meant that a 61-59 Republican advantage slipped into a 60-60 tie. Here's where history is now being distorted. Reporters and bloggers have said two historically inaccurate things. One was that Decker's party switch is the root of the power-sharing arrangement. The second is that Decker ignited the civil war that still rages in the Republican Party regarding former Republican House Co-Speaker Richard Morgan. (snip)Here's why that's wrong: The Republicans couldn't get 61 votes...

Under political pressure and with the growing recognition of North Carolina as an easy place for illegal immigrants to secure identification documents, the Governor and Division of Motor Vehicles have acted but without results. “We must act,” Berger said. “It is important for us to send a clear message that the State of North Carolina will not be your accomplice if you are in the country illegally."

RALEIGH — After The News & Observer of Raleigh published a story in February about his contract dispute with Basnight Construction of Manteo, James Morris of Elizabeth City thought it would be easier to collect about $50,000 he was owed. But, as of Tuesday, Morris still doesn’t have his money According to Morris, Deputy Greg Padilla, who handles collections for the Dare County Sheriff’s Department, told him a few weeks ago that the funds in Basnight Construction’s bank account at RBC Centura in Manteo had been secured but not released. (snip) Seeking an update, Morris said Friday that Padilla told...
