  • Microsoft Office lands on the Mac App Store (i.e. get MS-Office the way Apple intended)

Now you can download Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and OneDrive from Apple. No Clippy though. The next time you open up a new Apple computer, go to the App Store to start downloading apps, and type in "Microsoft Office," you'll actually get something.Until now, anyone who wanted to use Microsoft Office and its popular Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote apps had to do so by going to Microsoft's website and downloading it all from there. Now, they're available on the Mac App Store as well, making it even easier for people to download and use."We love the idea of the...
  • Computer help needed for Windows 10 - Where's Office?

Unfortunately, I've had to get a new computer and it's an Acer Windows 10. Does it not have Windows Office? From searches, apparently Windows 10 doesn't come with everything previous systems (95, XP, Windows 7) did. All I can find is a 30 day trial and then purchase window which asks for a 25 number key number which I can't find anywhere in the 5 small pieces of paperwork that came in the box. And the key number looks to be for a 30 day trial. Do I have to buy Office? What else will I have to buy? Any...

Office macro downloads malware used in JP Morgan heist. Australian businesses are currently being hit by cloud storage hosted Microsoft Office macro malware in large numbers in a month-long campaign uncovered by security researchers. Security vendor Trend Micro said its researchers detected an outbreak of spam that used fraudulent messages from the Automated Clearing House electronic funds transfer network that is regularly used by businesses for transactions with each other. The spam messages link to Dropbox sites that contain malicious Microsoft Office macros - named Bartalex - which if enabled by users, proceed to download a variant of the Dyre...
  • U.K. Cabinet Office Adopts ODF as Exclusive Standard for Sharable Documents

The U.K. Cabinet Office accomplished today what the Commonwealth of Massachusetts set out (unsuccessfully) to achieve ten years ago: it formally required compliance with the Open Document Format (ODF) by software to be purchased in the future across all government bodies. Compliance with any of the existing versions of OOXML, the competing document format championed by Microsoft, is neither required nor relevant. The announcement was made today by The Minister for the Cabinet Office, Francis Maude. Henceforth, ODF compliance will be required for documents intended to be shared or subject to collaboration. PDF/A or HTML compliance will be required for...
  • Best MS-Office open-source alternative?

    09/23/2013 2:29:33 AM PDT · by djf · 74 replies
I am running a very, very, very old version of MS-Office, as in like the first version! I am curious about people who have tried some of the open-source newer versions of Office compatible software. My OS is still XP SP3 with all the fixes. Recommendations? Horror stories? I have a second laptop I can try suggestions on without losing anything. Thanks in advance!

Microsoft has kicked off what it calls a "two-year countdown" to the death of Windows XP and the Office 2003 productivity suite. Separately, Microsoft announced that Windows Vista, the problem-plagued operating system that never really took hold among customers, exited mainstream support on April 10. In a product's extended support phase, Microsoft provides security patches to registered users but offers other fixes, including reliability and stability updates, only to organizations that have support contracts with the company. Windows XP and Office 2003 will no longer be supported as of April 8, 2014, a company spokeswoman said in a recent blog...

Thought I would bring an fyi to freeper students and educators who have a valid .edu address. Microsoft has a time limited offer for Windows 7 and MS Office. You can purchase Windows 7 Professional upgrade version for 29.99 and MS Office for 59.95. Some schools have a partnership deal with MS and some others don't with this you can purchase software at the price the partner schools receive it. This is a time limited offer though as it ends on Jan 3, 2010.

July 19, 2006 (Computerworld) -- Despite the criticism leveled at Microsoft Corp. after the recent rollout -- and rollback -- of Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA), experts say that effort was just the first phase in the company's latest antipiracy effort, dubbed the Genuine Software Initiative. In fact, the initiative -- which will include a similar campaign in the near term called Office Genuine Advantage (OGA) to fight piracy of Microsoft's dominant productivity software suite -- is tied in the long term with how Microsoft and other vendors will sell and deliver software. "It's getting to the point where we're getting...
  • Can I switch to a "folder" view of an open MS Office file?

I have an open MS Office file (e.g. Word document, Excel spreadsheet, PowerPoint presentation). I would like to see the graphical location of this file, using Windows Explorer. Is there a command I can use within that Office application that brings up, within Explorer, the location of that file? I know I can click on File/Properties, but then I have to remember the sequence of folders, then manually look it up via Explorer (which is a nuisance). I was hoping there's some way of zooming right to that location. I would need this capability, for example, if I wanted to...

Okay, call me a dummy... I seem to have lost the ability to access the "help" files in MS Office XP. I can type in my search criteria (like "Active X"), and it'll popup with a list of suggestions, but if I click on one of the suggestions, the help directory doesn't pop up like it used to. What am I missing? Thanks fellow Freepers.

IBM dismisses OpenOffice as child's play By Ashlee Vance in Chicago Posted: Ashlee Vance at 02:26 GMT IBM claims to have put more than $1 billion behind open source software, but the company is failing to pay even a modest amount of lip service to one of free software's most needed products. Karen Smith, vice president of Linux strategy and market development at IBM, has been telling a number of publications that no open source equivalent of Microsoft Office exists. Lest you think Smith has been living in a cave, rest easy. She does appear to be acquainted with OpenOffice...
