GRAND RAPIDS, MI — U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, R-Cascade Township, is being pressured to stay out of the race for retiring Sen. Carl Levin's seat by libertarian power brokers Ron and Rand Paul. That's according to a National Journal article published Wednesday that examines the potential candidacies of Amash and fellow Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Howell. According to the article, rumors are flying that Amash — branded in several national media articles as the "next Ron Paul" — is being cautioned against a run by the elder Paul and Rand Paul, a Kentucky senator: But perhaps most illustrative of the tension...

John Engler, largely based on superior name recognition, is the top choice of Michigan Republicans to take on Debbie Stabenow in 2012. Among the more likely roster of potential GOP contenders Pete Hoekstra is the leader by a good margin with only Mike Cox also hitting double digits. 31% of Republican voters say Engler would be their first choice, followed by 24% for Hoekstra, and 12% for Cox. Rounding out the Republicans polled is Terri Lynn Land at 7%, Candice Miller at 5%, Mike Rogers at 4%, Thad McCotter at 3%, and Tim Leuliette at 0%. If Leuliette, who has...

Local elections in Washtenaw County and all over Michigan as well as the nation are just beginning to pick up steam. Soon calls for you to dip into your pockets to support fundraising will follow. While early-on polling for the Republican nomination for governor clearly had shown Congressman Peter Hoekstra as having an early edge and state Attorney General Mike Cox in second place, a new entry who seems monetarily well-positioned to be a contender enter the fray. Gubernatorial hopeful businessman Rick Snyder started bombarding the airwaves in Michigan on Super Bowl Sunday with his “One Tough Nerd” commercial. He...

Mike Cox Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox today threw his support behind the National Rifle Association's challenge of a City of Chicago ordinance banning possession of most handguns by filing a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court. Cox's amicus brief -- a document filed in court by someone not directly related to a case -- supports the request by the NRA to the Supreme Court for an appeal of the U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals' decision in June favoring the City of Chicago. At least 33 other states support the NRA's request for the court to hear an appeal in...

Adulterers Could Face Life In PrisonPOSTED: 8:05 pm EST January 18, 2007 TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- People who cheat on their spouses know they could pay a steep price if caught. But life in prison? It's possible in Michigan, however unlikely, according to a state appeals court judge. His comment, in a written ruling in a drugs-for-sex case, adds a new twist to perpetual debates over marital morality -- and whether judges should always uphold the letter of the law, even when doing so would produce a wacky outcome. It also has generated unwanted publicity for state Attorney General Mike...

Attorney General Mike Cox on Wednesday tearfully acknowledged having an extramarital affair years ago and accused a political rival of threatening to expose the indiscretion. Cox alleged the threat began with an associate of Geoffrey Fieger, an attorney who became famous for representing assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian. Fieger plans to challenge Cox in the 2006 election.

Fieger to run for attorney general SOUTHFIELD - He's baaack. After several years of maintaining a relatively low profile, wellknown legal eagle Geoffrey Fieger announced Tuesday his intention to run for state attorney general in 2006 on the Democratic ticket. Never one to mince words, Fieger used a news conference at his Southfield office to accuse incumbent Attorney General Mike Cox and Republicans in general of bankrupting the state and kowtowing to corporate interests. He singled out Cox, accusing the fi rst-term prosecutor of not doing enough to advance consumer protections and of giving jobs to campaign contributors. "At a...

In an official opinion, which traditionally carries great persuasive weight, the Attorney General has stated that the Legal Birth Defintion Act, which would effectively ban partial birth abortion in Michigan, is constitutional. Of course, there is an active legal challenge in court that could turn out differently, but this is a good sign.

LANSING, MI — Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox issued the following statement today: "Michigan voters want a President who says what he thinks, not what he thinks his audience wants to hear. John Kerry supports the auto industry when he's in Michigan, but back in Washington gives in to extreme environmentalists and supports higher fuel efficiency standards that would kill Michigan jobs. Michigan workers aren't going to trust John Kerry's pandering, and they can't afford a candidate whose plans for higher taxes and more regulation will derail our economic recovery. "John Kerry likes to talk down the 1.5 million jobs...

He takes a head-on approach to the challenges of our changing world and continues to work toward a safer, stronger America. LANSING, MI—Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox (R-MI) issued the following statement addressing Sen. John Kerry's health care plan: "John Kerry's health care plan would add red tape while failing to reduce costs. Kerry's rhetoric is at odds with his long record of supporting the flow of frivolous lawsuits that make health care more expensive. The lawsuit lottery Kerry has blocked efforts to stop means higher health care costs for all Michiganders. Kerry even fought against the President's legislation to guarantee affordable prescription drugs for Michigan's 1.2 million seniors."

LANSING, MI - Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox (R) issued the following statement on the effect Sen. John Kerry's economic policies would have on Michigan workers: "John Kerry's job-killing combination of higher taxes and extreme environmental regulations threatens the livelihood of all Michigan workers. The 50-cent per gallon gasoline tax increase Kerry supported would force Michiganders to go into the red at the pump and receive pink slips at work. Kerry's bill to raise CAFE standards could destroy hundreds of thousands of jobs and was slammed by the UAW because it would paralyze American automakers," Cox said. 1994: Backed Half-Dollar...

With the exception of L. Brooks Patterson's deft turns as a stand-up comedian, this year's Detroit Regional Chamber conference on Mackinac Island was, as expected, dominated by Democrats.

There was the feel-good Democrat: Gov. Jennifer Granholm, spreading fairy dust over throngs of rapt conference-goers. There was the edgy Democrat: Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, trading quips with Patterson, Oakland County's executive, and showing off the formidable political skills that got him elected (after spending the past three weeks at home, making people wonder why they allowed it to happen).
