Attorney General Mike Cox on Wednesday tearfully acknowledged having an extramarital affair years ago and accused a political rival of threatening to expose the indiscretion.
Cox alleged the threat began with an associate of Geoffrey Fieger, an attorney who became famous for representing assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian. Fieger plans to challenge Cox in the 2006 election.

Will Cox blame freeper MIforKerry?
Mike Cox should not seek reelection. The honorable thing to do would be for him to return to private life to repair his family and regain its trust. He has served with distinction in the past and we should acknowlege that, but a man in his position should have known better than to do something like this.
"tearfully" ?? Wonder how that went over with the voters.
You're right about Fieger. And I don't claim to be morally superior to Cox or anyone else. But Cox should have known better than to put himself in this position, given his responsibilities.
"years ago"
How would "years ago" interfere with his responsibilities NOW ..??
My guess is his family has already gotten past his indiscretion. Mike Cox is a good man and an outstanding AG. I'll back his reelection in a second if that's what he decides to do.
"How could the attorney general have so many skeletons in his closet that he could be blackmailed? Why is he subjecting his wife to this humiliation?"
Such concern coming from a slimeball like Figer.
He may be a slime but I would take my chances with him as my lawyer before a lot of others who are only interested in taking your money.
I like Mike but the articles saids he told his wife March of 2003, just 2 years ago
Ya mean wife beater Fieger, among other things
Fieger isn't a credible candidate, but former Grand Rapids Judge Scott Bowen, a pro-life moderate, could be a real threat to Cox next year.
You are correct and I even believe Bowen will win. Cox was foolish (if not deceitful)for calling blackmail and blaming Fieger as he cannot win a battle of words with Fieger. I also don't think Cox' affair was all that much of a secret
plus he needs to get a new hairdo.
No 'Rat has ANY right whatsoever to challenge, criticize or JUDGE any Republican who might have faltered in their marriage. Fieger's little stunt proves what kind of a scumbag he is. I don't approve of Cox's conduct, but if it is a settled issue between him and his wife, I'm not going to demand his head on a pike. After all, we know that Republican wives are NOT enablers. I'll support him.
I expected better from Mike, but Fieger broke campaign finance law and laundered money with his "Herb Charboneau" donations. That's a helluva lot worse than making a poor family decision.
It seriously peeves me that Greta gives him any kind of credibility. He makes my skin crawl every time I see him.
He is just nasty.
