Senate Republicans are resisting calls to shut down the government if Democrats try to keep a longstanding offshore drilling ban intact. Despite the party’s election-year rallying cry that expanding offshore drilling would lower high gas prices and reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil, several GOP senators said holding up a must-pass continuing resolution (CR), which may include an extension of the drilling ban, is not yet in the calculus. “Obviously, there will be an interest for getting a vote on drilling in the CR, but it’s not going to lead to any dramatic event,” said Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), an...

Immigration Reform Many of my constituents are interested in reviewing the text of the immigration reform bill that is now under consideration in the Senate. You may read it by clicking here (pdf, 846K).The process by which the immigration bill was brought to the Senate floor has understandably generated some confusion about which version of reform the Senate is actually considering. The Senate Majority Leader introduced S. 1348, the same bill that the Senate passed last year (a bill that I opposed), as a way to restart the Senate’s debate regarding immigration reform. The alternative that I helped negotiate would...

Tucson Region Demos 'laundering' funds, says GOP By Howard Fischer Capitol Media Services Tucson, Arizona | Published: 11.04.2006 PHOENIX — The state Republican Party is asking the Federal Elections Commission to investigate what it claims is a "money laundering scheme" by the Democrats and Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Jim Pederson. The complaint, filed Friday, stems from the transfer of more than $480,000 from the Arizona Democratic Party to affiliates in other states — money those state parties turned around and sent back, in similar amounts, to Arizona. The Arizona dollars were from money raised for state races. The funds sent...

U.S. Army troops operating at a former Iraqi air base recently made a startling discovery: Russian-made missiles marked with radioactive warning signs. Army bomb disposal troops confirmed using Geiger counters that the missiles are indeed radioactive. The discovery is not, however, considered the long-sought "smoking gun" of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. The missiles appear to be part of a cache of weapons supplied to Iraq before the 1991 Gulf War. The Russian-made R-60, NATO code name AA-8 Aphid, air-to-air missiles are part of a huge stockpile of former Iraqi Air Force munitions uncovered in over a dozen concrete bunkers....

NEW YORK (AP) -- With the political relevance of "The Daily Show" and the huge DVD sales (and subsequent hiatus) of "Chappelle's Show," it's easy to forget about that other Comedy Central show, "South Park." But Matt Stone and Trey Parker's crude cartoon began its ninth season last Wednesday -- and it remains the network's most-watched program. It is also, perhaps, still the most manic thing on TV, with entire episodes created just days before they air. With a ripped-from-the-headlines approach, it's the "Law & Order" of comedy. The first episode, "Two Days Before the Day After Tomorrow," tackles Hurricane...

Last week, along with my colleague John Cornyn of Texas, I introduced comprehensive legislation designed to secure America's borders and deal with the fact that more than 10 million people are living illegally in the United States. A lot of people ask me: "Why should we believe this will be any different than other ill-fated immigration 'reforms'?" It is a question that should be asked of any proposal that claims to resolve these issues. The primary reason I believe our bill represents a genuine solution is that it contains tough, overlapping new measures to enforce the law at our borders...

The newest episode of South Park has Kyle's brother Ike being taken away by his Canadian parents, due to a decree by the "new Canadian prime minister". The boys embark on an Oz-like journey across Canada to change the prime minister's mind. I died laughing at the ending. They must have thought the plot line up in under 24 hours.

By Senator Jon Kyl “Born in other countries, yet believing you could be happy in this, our laws acknowledge, as they should do, your right to join us in society, conforming, as I doubt not you will do, to our established rules. That these rules shall be [equal] will certainly be the aim of our legislatures." So wrote Thomas Jefferson 202 years ago. His sentiment then holds true today. America should be a welcoming haven for immigrants. But those seeking citizenship must follow our nation's rules. And our governments, both local and federal, have a responsibility to apply immigration laws...
