Baseball pranks have been around as long as the game itself. It’s not much different than good natured hazing, in that a little prank and now you’re one of the guys.
The fact that the player’s agent and the reporters were in on the joke should signal that, while it was more intricate than a pie in the face, it’s intent was the same.
