Those desperate to stop Zohran Mamdani becoming New York mayor want a two-horse race. The Republican candidate has stuck his heels in
Curtis Sliwa stands little chance of becoming New York’s next mayor.
But when asked what it would take for him to drop out of the race, the red beret-wearing Republican left no room for ambiguity.
“A Mack truck hits me and I get turned into a speed bump, and they can’t recover me in the ICU. That’s the only way.”
Mr Sliwa has been behind in the polls from the outset and those desperate to keep Zohran Mamdani out of Gracie Mansion would prefer a two-horse race between the socialist and Andrew Cuomo.
Donald Trump and a raft of billionaire New Yorkers, including John Catsimatidis, who owns the radio station on which Mr Sliwa’s has a show, have suggested the Republican drop out.
Mr Sliwa, who with his thick Brooklyn accent styles himself as a true man of the people, insisted the city’s mayor isn’t picked by “the billionaires or the professional political class.”
Recent polling shows Mr Cuomo, running as an independent, has halved the gap between himself and Mr Mamdani, the 34-year-old Democratic Socialist, to 11 per cent, a promising development for the former New York governor.
But Mr Sliwa, 71, has stuck his heels in.
“Sliwa is definitely polling worse than Cuomo, but he is the major party nominee,” said Sam Raskin, senior vice president of Slingshot Strategies, a political consulting firm based in Brooklyn.
“It is kind of a strange situation that one of the major party nominees is being asked to drop out in favour of Cuomo, that is an unusual situation. So from his perspective [it’s] ‘why don’t you drop out Andrew Cuomo?... Why should I drop out...?’”

Why won’t he? Because Cuomo is just as bad as Mamdani. Either Curtis wins or the city is effed.
Cuomo is the guy who got rid of cash bail, who set up the parole board that released 42 cop killers in 7 years, who killed thousands of elderly in nursing homes. Mamdani didn’t do that, CUOMO did! So why the hell should Curtis drop out to help that piece of sh**?
Why should the one sane candidate in the race drop out?

Why doesn’t Cuomo drop out? He lost his primary to Zoolander.

Sliwa voters are very, very unlikely to vote for Cuomo, or Mamdani for that matter. He's spent years of podcasting criticizing the Cuomos.
Because he can’t get elected. He’s splitting the vote.

Why would a Republican candidate drop out of a race to help a Democrat who lost in the primary?
He’s a real thorn in their sides.

That, and the fact that he little clue as to the clear fact that he would never get a majority, or even a plurality in NY as New Yorkian voters simply love crime and squalor and corruption.
First and foremost, the residents of NYC. Then the rest of us, who will be forced to bail them out.
