Mayor de Blasio of New York City recently tweeted what has become a controversial tweet. After hearing of a large gathering of Chasidic Jews in Brooklyn attending a funeral for a well known neighborhood rabbi, de Blasio tweeted: "My message to the Jewish community, and all communities, is this simple: the time for warnings has passed. I have instructed the NYPD to proceed immediately to summons or even arrest those who gather in large groups." While I don't think de Blasio is an anti-Semite, nonetheless, I would wager my last subway token that he would never publicly tweet against the...

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is being accused of singling out his city’s Jewish community after a Brooklyn funeral was broken up by police for allegedly violating social distancing requirements being enforced during the coronavirus pandemic. The funeral of Rabbi Chaim Mertz in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn appeared to draw a massive crowd, as images of the scene appeared on social media. De Blasio even went to the site of the funeral with police before posting a tweet that touched off the backlash. “My message to the Jewish community, and all communities, is this simple: the...

When it comes to mass discrimination, history has not been kind to people of Jewish faith. That’s why the local chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace has taken to solidarity with persecuted refugees and those of Muslim faith, even if it is as simple as a sign that says “Refugees are Welcome Here.” “As Jewish folks in particular, because we are not right now being targeted by the state, we really want to stand in solidarity with those who are being targeted, including Muslims and all people of color,” said Wendy Elisheva Somerson, a founding member of Seattle’s chapter...

American Jewry is being tested today as never before. The future of the community is tied up in the results of the test. If the Jews of America are able to mount a successful, forceful and sustained opposition to President Barack Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran, which allows the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism to become a nuclear-armed state and provides it with $150 billion up front, then the community will survive politically to fight another day. If the communal leadership and its members fail to fight, American Jews will find themselves communally disenfranchised. On the face of it,...

The Twilight Zone” Greetings fellow South Florida riders, South Floridians, and Americans, here we are for another monthly installment of our Wheels on the Road political assessment. This month’s title is appropriate because Rod Serling could not have written this script any better. Everyday we wake up and have to ask ourselves, “Are we in some kinda parallel universe”? Actually Serling had an episode which fits appropriately. Therefore I googled up what has to be my favorite Twilight Zone episode, “To Serve Man”. Here is the synopsis of the episode, which was available upon search. “A race of aliens known...

The Mosaic Religious Community has advised its Jewish members against speaking Hebrew loudly on the streets of Oslo or wearing Jewish emblems. The suggestion has infuriated some in the membership. "We have encouraged our members to avoid speaking Hebrew loudly on the street," Anne Sender of the Jewish organization told newspaper Vårt Land. She also told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) that men may want to reconsider wearing the yarmulke. That's provoked journalist Mona...

WASHINGTON -- When he was speaker of the House of Representatives, Tip O'Neill used to say that all politics is local. But in Georgia, a second member of Congress faces possible defeat over an international issue. Rep. Cynthia McKinney, an outspoken supporter of Arab causes, is in a tight Democratic primary battle against former state judge Denise Majette. Pro-Israel contributions from outside Georgia have flowed to Majette, while the bulk of McKinney's contributions came from donors who have given to pro-Arab causes. It's unusual for a challenger to outraise an incumbent, yet Majette has raised $1.2 million, almost double McKinney's...

Nearly 1,000 members of Los Angeles' Jewish community interrupted delivery of their Los Angeles Times citing an alleged pro-Arab bias in the paper's coverage of the Middle East crisis. According to the Times, as part of a protest reportedly organized in the local Jewish community timed to correspond with Wednesday's 54th anniversary of Israeli independence, the subscribers "have ordered suspension of home delivery for a day or more to protest what they call inaccurate, pro-Palestinian reporting of the unrest in the Middle East." While the newspaper's officials said they could not provide precise figures on the number of delivery suspensions,...
