Friends don’t let friends invite Robert De Niro to their movie premieres. Director Francis Ford Coppola learned that lesson the hard way this week. The Hollywood icon debuted “Megalopolis,” his audacious new film starring Adam Driver and Jon Voight, before select IMAX audiences nationwide Monday. Coppola introduced the film personally via a livestream Q&A prior to the screening featuring longtime pals De Niro and director Spike Lee. Neither is involved with the project, but both share long, personal ties with the director. The event was meant to honor both Coppola and his latest film, but De Niro and Lee turned...

Sen. Elizabeth Warren is calling out Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder, and this time it has nothing to do with his football team’s name. In a tweet Saturday, the Massachusetts senator and 2020 presidential candidate used Snyder’s recent purchase of a $100 million yacht as evidence that the super-wealthy could afford to pay her recently proposed wealth tax. As the Washington Post reported, the 305-foot ship is believed to be the first “superyacht” with a certified Imax theater. “This billionaire NFL owner just paid $100M for a ‘superyacht’ with its own Imax theater,” Warren wrote. “I’m pretty sure he can...

California Science Center The state-run California Science Center (CSC) has paid $110,000 to settle a lawsuit by American Freedom Alliance (AFA) against CSC for violating AFA's First Amendment free speech rights to advocate intelligent design (ID). As part of the settlement, the CSC also has invited AFA to present the ID event it previously cancelled. CSC rented its IMAX theater to AFA to show Darwin's Dilemma, a science documentary advocating ID. However, when CSC learned the film would portray ID favorably, CSC cancelled AFA's event. AFA filed suit in California Superior Court alleging viewpoint discrimination and breach of contract. "This...

PEORIA — When Aziz Ansari, a star on NBC's "Parks and Recreation," walked into an IMAX Theatre in California last year to watch Star Trek, he was disappointed. Ansari took to his blog and lampooned the Canadian-based company for what he called false advertising since the movie theater screen is much smaller than a typical seven-story IMAX screen seen at museums and theme parks. It generated a buzz in the media, and a response from the company's CEO who said consumers embraced the smaller-sized IMAX screens and the experience it provides. The TV star's disappointment in IMAX underscores some of...

This is a posting of a liberal bias warning. I just returned from a week of vacation in Myrtle Beach and went to the new IMAX 3D theater at Broadway at the Beach one day to see a film on the Grand Canyon. I thought I would be seeing a film show casing the 3D technology and images. What I got was a biased political screed from Robert Redford on the dangers on Anthropogenic Global Warming and the evil dangers of mankind to the planet. There was no balance and the whole program was about what we could do to...

It’s been the way of film advertising lately to release a small snippet from the movie in advance to the movies release....it looks as if Batman the Dark Knight will be screening a 6 or 7 minute trailer this December...(There's more at the link but most of it's irrelevant.)By the way, this was recently confirmed to be true, although I couldn't find a link. There WILL be a 7-minute prologue to "The Dark Knight" this December, and it will premiere ONLY in IMAX theaters before the Will Smith movie "I Am Legend."

Probably the most remarkable success in America’s space program (outside of being able to put humans on the Moon in 1969 after just eight years), has to be the story of two robotic rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, trucking around on Mars for more than two years. No one appears more surprised at their longevity than the teams of scientists and engineers who built and still operate these remarkable machines, except possibly the film crew that set out to chronicle their adventures for Walt Disney and IMAX. "Roving Mars" takes us all on an unforgettable journey to the Red Planet, piggybacking...

Tom Hanks has been obsessed with space since he was a kid, lying in front of the TV set watching the first men walk on the moon. He loved the romance, and the notion that the astronauts were headed to a place where no human had set foot before. He wanted to go himself but knew, “I didn’t have the math.” He was soon on his way to becoming an actor, though he never dreamed he’d be where he is today: He’s won two Oscars, and is producing, directing and performing in projects that fire his curiosity. His new IMAX...

Even teachers call it the E-word. Evolution is the cornerstone of modern biology, yet many teachers face disapproval and even anger for teaching it, more so than for any other lesson plan. Nearly one-third of science teachers say they feel pressured to teach creationism or other nonscience-based alternatives along with evolution in their classrooms, according to a new study by the National Science Teachers Association. How to face that pressure - and defuse it - is the topic of several major lectures at the group's annual convention, which starts Thursday at the Dallas Convention Center and downtown hotels. Among the...

IMAX theaters in several Southern cities have decided not to show a film on volcanoes out of concern that its references to evolution might offend those with fundamental religious beliefs. "We've got to pick a film that's going to sell in our area. If it's not going to sell, we're not going to take it," said Lisa Buzzelli, director of an IMAX theater in Charleston that is not showing the movie. "Many people here believe in creationism, not evolution." The film, "Volcanoes of the Deep Sea," makes a connection between human DNA and microbes inside undersea volcanoes. Buzzelli doesn't rule...

Some IMAX theaters are refusing to carry movies that promote evolution, citing concerns that doing so offends their audience and creates controversy – a move that has some proponents of Darwinism alarmed over the influence of "fundamentalists." It's a decision that affects not only the network of 240 IMAX theaters operating in 35 countries, but some science museums that show IMAX-formatted films. IMAX, which bills itself as the "ultimate movie experience," promises to take viewers to "places you only imagined." The 8-story high screens and crystal clear images have made the theaters ideal venues for documentary science films showing the...

The fight over evolution has reached the big, big screen. Several Imax theaters, including some in science museums, are refusing to show movies that mention the subject - or the Big Bang or the geology of the earth - fearing protests from people who object to films that contradict biblical descriptions of the origin of Earth and its creatures. The number of theaters rejecting such films is small, people in the industry say - perhaps a dozen or fewer, most in the South. But because only a few dozen Imax theaters routinely show science documentaries, the decisions of a few...
