Universal Pictures has announced on X that acclaimed director Christopher Nolan’s next film will be an adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey. The British director’s next project is tipped to be a “mythic action epic” and will be shot with cutting-edge IMAX films. It will be released in theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026.
The film’s cast is star-studded, as Nolan has assembled an all-star roster to do justice to one of the most influential writings in human history. Cast members for this project include Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron.
This will be Nolan’s and Universal’s follow-up for the award-winning Oppenheimer. Production on the movie is set to begin in the first half of 2025. The director is also set to write and produce with Emma Thomas.
Homer, an ancient Greek poet, wrote the Odyssey, one of the most renowned epic poems still read and studied by audiences to this day. He is also credited with writing The Iliad, another of his works that is foundational to Western literature.
Remarkably, not much is known about Homer’s life. In fact, some have even disputed his very existence, believing instead that Homer is more of a symbol for an entire ancient group of oral poets.
Grecian Delight supports Greece
The Odyssey recounts the ten-year journey back home of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, at the conclusion of the Trojan War. On his journey home to his wife Penelope, he faces numerous obstacles and challenges. The Odyssey is characterized by the exploration of themes such as heroism, loyalty, and the struggle against adversity. To say that Odysseus was unlucky during his journey would be an understatement.
This epic poem also features some of the greatest characters of Greek mythology, including gods and monsters such as Poseidon, Athena, the Cyclops, Sirens, and Scylla, a six-headed monster.
Tom Holland signed on to work with Christopher Nolan without knowing they were adapting the Odyssey Following his appearances as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland has become one of Hollywood’s main A-listers and a name that studios would break the bank to have on their projects.
Last week, however, Holland admitted that he signed on to the project without a clear idea as to what Christopher Nolan’s production would entail. “To be perfectly honest, I don’t really know what it’s about,” admitted Holland in an interview with The Dish podcast. He also revealed that he had met with Nolan and described his pitch for the film as “awesome.”
Now, both Christopher Nolan and Tom Holland will gear up to produce what could be a once-in-a-lifetime movie, as they aim to do justice to one of the single most noteworthy works of literature ever written.
Release the KRAKEN!....................
Zendaya, and Charlize Theron are attached to this project so...I’ll probably watch it....twice
I thought that was what the O Brother, where art thou? Movie Was about? 🤷
Good.
Tom Holland doesn’t strike me has having the physical presence to portray a Greek Hero. Zendaya is just... extremely limited.
And Matt Damon.....he was great in Team America world police......probably his best work.
Christopher Nolan might be the best current A list director for this kind of project. His films are serious; he’s avoided the really cringeworthy stuff and does high budget blockbuster projects with discipline and integrity. Thank goodness they didn’t give this project to Ridley Scott, who has done some great films in the past but who has gone off the rails (House of Gucci, Napoleon, Gladiator 2). I have hopes for this one. Mixed feelings about the cast announced so far.
More sword-fighting skeletons, I hope.
“Oppenheimer” was an awful film.
I don't know if it is an intentional marketing gimmick, but Holland always comes across as an absolute airhead. The pitch was awesome! I have no idea what the movie is about!
These days Nolan has enough cache that the pitch might just be “Nolan wants you”.
Interesting this announcement hits now, 2 weeks The Return opened, that’s basically the last chapter of Odyssey, and really good. And now Nolan wants to do the whole thing.
I think that’s a great idea. It was the “Star Trek” of its time.
I would watch a Michael Fassbender Odyssey.
They couldn’t find any liberal actors?

“Cast members for this project include... The Geritol For Lunch Bunch.”
Please no.
Which one is Penelope (the real hero of the story)?
Which one is Circe?
