Stan Cass will live on … in gold. Cass, who died in Greeley two years ago, was greatly honored at West Point this week in a Ring Melt Ceremony. As an influential member of Greeley and Weld County, Cass was a retired colonel in the U.S. Army, a graduate of West Point, a Vietnam War veteran and was the founder of the Honor Flight Northern Colorado, a group that flies veterans to Washington, D.C., every six months to see the war memorials. And it is because of his achievements that his family was at West Point this week for the...

WASHINGTON — Wheelchair-bound elderly veterans pushed aside barricades to tour the World War II Memorial Tuesday morning, in defiance of the government shutdown which closed all of the memorials in the nation’s capital. The four bus loads of veterans — visiting from Mississippi as part of a once-in-a-lifetime Honor Flight tour — ignored National Park Police instructions not to enter the site as lawmakers and tourists cheered them on. “We didn’t come this far not to get in,” one veteran proclaimed. The scene was both emotional and comical at once. After it was clear they had lost control of the...

'Honor is a hard term to describe. It doesn’t have a color or weight or shape. If someone were to ask me what honor looked like, I’d probably struggle with what to say. But something happened on May 23, 2012 at 9:31 a.m. at Gate 38 of Reagan National Airport that might change that. A flash mob of sorts broke out. But not like you’ve seen on YouTube with highly choreographed dance numbers or people singing a song in unison. In fact, virtually all of the participants of this “flash mob” didn’t know they would be participating until moments before...

COLUMBIA - Chester Williamson, a World War II veteran, was honored today by Columbia's Honor Flight group today. Williamson, now 87-years-old, liberated two concentrations camps during World War II. Today, his health is deteriorating and he is unable to fly, so members of the community brought Honor Flight to him. The honor group of motorcycle riders came to Williamson's nursing home just like they would for the Honor Flights. Williamson's family said that it was very meaningful and important to him. "He had no idea this was coming. It means the world to him," Joan Burke, his daughter, said. Both...
