UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- Protests concerning the migrant crisis turned violent over the weekend outside Gracie Mansion on the Upper East Side. Groups on opposite sides of the issue clashed with some even throwing punches. In all, five people were arrested, including the Guardian Angels leader Curtis Sliwa. Sliwa criticized Mayor Eric Adams, who earlier this summer said he would welcome a few families at Gracie Mansion if allowed. "The next day he flipped his script and said he can't do that. Who told you you can't do that? You're the mayor," Sliwa said. The crowd was in...

The Guardian Angels pounced on a subway rider who was assaulting an elderly woman in the Bronx on Saturday, according to Curtis Sliwa, the group’s founder. The incident happened about noon on a D train at 167th Street, when three Guardian Angels saw a man and woman yelling at the elderly straphanger, Sliwa said. “The man reaches out and smacks her multiple times,” he said. “The Guardian Angels, three of them, jump the guy.” NYPD officers, who were at the station, arrested the man, but he was released on a desk appearance ticket, Sliwa said. The same trio of Guardian...

[Catholic Caucus] Padre Pio and the Seminarian’s Guardian Angel Padre Pio with Father Jean DerobertThe French writer, Yves Chiron, in his biography, cites the case of an American soldier, upon landing in Italy [during the Second World War]. This Catholic man was black and hailed from New York. In terms of English he only spoke the Harlem slang-dialect, incomprehensible to anyone who had not grown up up in that black neighborhood. As soon as the soldier knelt before Padre Pio, the Friar began speaking this slang as if he had done so all his life. But Padre Pio possessed...

e-mail 19 View comments New York City has elected black former policeman Eric Adams as mayor, making the Democrat the next leader of America's biggest city. The result was called by Associated Press shortly after the polls closed at 9pm Eastern Time, with less than 30 per cent of the vote counted. Adams already had a 50 point lead, CNN reported. The centrist Democrat trounced Republican rival and volunteer crime fighter Curtis Sliwa in the liberal-voting bastion to become just the second African American to lead the Big Apple. Sliwa, who founded the vigilante group Guardian Angels, showed up to...

Our Guardian Angels Watch Over Us. By JAG September 18,2021 Based on . . . Matthew 18:1-10 Hebrews 1:14 Psalms 34:7 many have concluded that each of we Christians have at least one, or more, Guardian Angles that are assigned to watchcare and protect us during our lifetime. Matthew 18:10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven." Hebrews 1:14 "Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?" Psalms 34:7 "The angel of...

Curtis Sliwa has been a fixture in New York City for more than four decades, best known for starting the Guardian Angels, the volunteer anti-crime group, but he’s also worked as a trash-picker, newspaper boy, TV and radio host, and cat dad to more than a dozen rescued felines. As someone who claims to know the city streets and subways better than anyone else, there’s a certain logic to his latest move: running for mayor. The Republican nominee will face off against Democrat Eric Adams in November, a race that pits two New York City natives in their sixties against each...

A string of moving trucks was spotted in Manhattan’s Upper West Side on Saturday, according to Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa. “The mass evacuation of Upper West Siders from NYC is in full effect,” he told the New York Post. Sliwa blamed the city’s decision to house hundreds of homeless people in the neighborhood’s hotels for the exodus. “The moment I walked out on my block, near Central Park West, there was a moving truck. I asked where you going, and they said, ‘Virginia.’ They told me, ‘Curtis, first the pandemic hit us and now the quality of life is...

For Valerie Clark, the breaking point was when a stranger threatened her outside her home. It was about two weeks ago that the man came up to her as she was entering her apartment building on the Upper West Side. “You’re fixing to get attacked,” he growled. “I know where you live, and you deserve it.” Clark skirted him, called the police and made a vow: “I said, ‘I’m not going to turn my back.’” So the 47-year-old, whose daughters are 12 and 14, has spent the past two weeks patrolling her neighborhood with the Guardian Angels, the volunteer organization founded...

Since 1979, when crime was at its pinnacle across New York City, Curtis Sliwa, 66, has led a group of volunteers known as the "Guardian Angels" in signature red jackets who roam lawless pockets and aid those in need. But Tuesday night, amid the ongoing unrest gripping much of the nation following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, was one of the most chaotic and confronting scenes he has ever encountered, he said. "Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, we have mostly been in Chinatown to stop any hate crimes against Asians," Sliwa told Fox News. "But on Tuesday night, we...

NBC reports the Guardian Angels, a private, unarmed crime-prevention group, said it would start patrolling New York City’s Brooklyn borough on Sunday following a series of anti-Semitic attacks. Curtis Sliwa, who founded the organization in 1979 in New York City, said the patrols would start at noon in the Crown Heights neighborhood and expand to Williamsburg and Borough Park later in the day. The move came hours before five people were wounded in a stabbing attack during a Hanukkah party at a rabbi’s house in upstate New York late Saturday. The latest incident followed eight attacks on Jews in...

Don’t Name Your Guardian Angel Msgr. Charles Pope • October 2, 2018 • Guardian Angel Protecting Child, Domenico Fetti (1615-18)The Feast of the Guardian Angels, celebrated on Tuesday, seems an appropriate time to point out that the common practice of naming one’s guardian angel should be avoided.A document authored by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in 2001 states, “The practice of assigning names to the holy angels should be discouraged, except in the cases of Gabriel, Raphael, and Michael, whose names are contained in Holy Scripture” (Directory on Popular Piety in the Liturgy:...

October 2, 2016 Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading 1 Hab 1:2-3; 2:2-4 How long, O LORD? I cry for helpbut you do not listen!I cry out to you, “Violence!”but you do not intervene. Why do you let me see ruin;why must I look at misery?Destruction and violence are before me;there is strife, and clamorous discord. Then the LORD answered me and said:Write down the vision clearly upon the tablets,so that one can read it readily. For the vision still has its time, presses on to fulfillment, and will not disappoint;if it delays, wait for it,it will surely come, it will not be...

There's been another slashing on a New York City subway, and terrified riders are calling for protection. This, as Police Commissioner Bill Bratton insists the subways are safe. As CBS2's Alice Gainer reported, a 30-year-old man is recovering after being slashed with a knife while on a No. 3 train Monday around 12:40 p.m. "SNIP" "Every night I see a different slashing," one woman said. "It does concern me because I have to take it every day. So it's kind of scary," another woman said.

The Guardian Angels are back — and their leader says it’s because Mayor Bill de Blasio can’t keep New York City safe. Curtis Sliwa, 61, radio personality and founder of the unarmed anti-crime patrol, joined five of his Angels in their first sortie into Central Park in more than two decades Sunday night. “If the mayor won’t let the cops do their job, then we, the citizens, will have to go back to guarding our parks, streets and subways,” Sliwa said. We all have guardian angels. Jesus told His disciples, “See that you despise not one of these little ones: for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven†(Mt 18:10, emphasis added). However, very few of us realize this or would even dare to converse with them on a daily basis. For most of us guardian angels are “cute†stories we tell children so that they are not afraid of the dark. What we don’t realize is that our guardians angels are there right beside us, ready to help...

No virus, no act of terrorism, no politician posing as president is as powerful as the protectors sent by the Almighty whose Feast Day is today. Is it only by happenstance that the Feast of the Guardian Angels always takes place at a time of year when the northeast is garlanded by the crimson, russet and golden leaves of another glorious autumn? The autumn leaves drifting down from the trees are there to see, even though they fall ever so quietly. The ones swirling down just outside my window remind me on today’s Feast of the Guardian Angels that I,...
