  • Adjustable gas plug: M1 Garand

I'm looking for feedback regarding adjustable gas plugs for an M1 Garand. M2 Ball and equivalents, like most other ammo, isn't all that easy to come by but I've been able to find plenty of 150gr 30-06 though it's generally at higher pressures than M2. My understanding is that an adjustable gas plug will allow me to dial in adjustments for modern, higher pressure ammo, heavier bullet weights, etc. If anyone has experience with, and recommendations regarding, these plugs I'd be happy to hear them.

It is said that General George S. Patton called the M1 Garand rifle “the greatest battle implement ever devised.” That may very well be true. If it is, then M1 Garand rifle serial number 1,000,000 should be considered “THE greatest battle implement ever devised.” Why the emphasis? Simple: that gun belonged to the inventor himself – John Garand. (Incidentally, all of us may or may not have been pronouncing his name incorrectly for decades. The article below is from 1943. However, Garand’s son noted a different – more common – pronunciation in 1999. You decide!) When Garand retired on April...

The 100,000 1911s slated for the Civilian Marksmanship Program(CMP) have not yet been released, but Cheaper Than Dirt reports something nearly as cool is happening. Approximately 100,000 Turkish and Philippine M1 Garands have been released to the CMP, and orders are currently being taken. Former (Lord, I love saying that) President Barack Obama had signed an order releasing the 1911s and Garands to the CMP in theory, but never actually made them available (surprise, surprise), and shooters despaired the guns would never find their way to the U.S. Worry no more! The CMP received the Garands over the last month...

The Civilian Marksmanship Program may receive 86,000 repatriated M1 Garand rifles from the Philippine government. According to an M1 Garand collectors group, a large group of loaned rifles are being processed by the U.S. Army to be shipped back to the United States. ...

In January 1945, just months before Germany's unconditional surrender in World War Two, George S. Patton famously declared the M1 Garand as "the greatest battle implement ever devised." The accolade is well-deserved. This semi-automatic rifle served American troops in the fields of Northern France, the coasts of Okinawa, the dry heat of Africa, and the oppressive humidity of the Philippines. And in more ways than one, the M1 Garand helped win the bloodiest war in human history. THE BEGINNING OF A WORLD WAR WEAPON Fittingly, the gun that would help to liberate France was created by a French-Canadian—John Cantius Garand....

Now that we have a pro-gun President, do you think he will repatriate all the firearms out there that Obama didn't let in? I understand that there are boat loads of WWII weapons discovered since the fall of the Soviet Union and the merging of East Germany with Germany. At least that is my impression. And that Clinton and Obama have made it illegal for people to return these guns to America for sale. Am I completely out of touch with this or are there thousands and thousands of Garands, carbines and 1911s overseas that Trump could allow for sale...

The War Department Appropriations Bill of 1903 established many things, but the one that begins our story today is its founding of the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice. Teddy Roosevelt was in office at the time and his enthusiasm for the shooting sports, and this bill, also gave rise to the National Rifle and Pistol Trophy Matches. Needless to say that the government wanted its citizens proficient in firearms use, perhaps spurred on by the recently ended Spanish-American War (1899) and the numerous other conflicts in which America involved itself in the Caribbean, Pacific islands, and Central...

The rifle is built to replicate the original in look, feel, and heft. The heart of the design is a .22 caliber receiver based on the design of the Ruger 10/22, but made of steel, not aluminum. The receiver is housed in a stock and hand guards made from real American Walnut.

Do you wonder why that rifle Is hanging in my den? You know I rarely take it down But I touch it now and then. It's rather slow and heavy By standards of today But not too many years ago It swept the rest away. It's held its own in battles Through snow, or rain, or sun And I had one just like it, This treasured old M-1. It went ashore at Bougainville In Nineteen Forty-Three. It stormed the beach at Tarawa Through a bullet-riddled sea. Saipan knew its strident bark, Kwajalein, its sting. The rocky caves of Peleliu Resounded...

Garand collectors have long known about these, as stored and recorded by Springfield Armory, but as far as we know, nobody’s found one yet. In 1959, Armory officials told the local newspaper that a few cans recently arrived (of which, more later) were the last survivors of the cans the Armory filled in 1947 and 1948 — apart from a few in the collection of the Armory’s museum. Right after World War II, the Armed Forces went from something like 12 million men, mostly armed with M1 Garands, to a tiny fraction of the size. Logistical problem: trainloads of surplus...

Just in time for the 68th anniversary of D-Day. The importation of as many as 87,000 M1 Garands gathering dust in South Korean storage may soon get the green light for importation to the US. Special thanks is due to Montana Senator John Tester and Representative Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming who introduced legislation to prevent the US government from interfering with the importation of US-made guns that were previously exported to other countries. In the face of this pressure, the State Department will no longer prohibit the exportation of these M1 Garands back to the US. "From World War II...

President Obama is using his budget to advance an anti-gun agenda just before the election. One particularly sneaky provision buried deep within his submission to Congress Monday would, if enacted, allow the mistakes of the “Fast and Furious” gun-walking scandal to be repeated. In November, the president signed the Justice Department appropriations bill, which included language from Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican, prohibiting federal agencies from facilitating the transfer of an operable firearm to an individual known or suspected to be in a drug cartel, unless they monitor the weapon at all times. Now Mr. Obama is proposing to remove...

The Korea Times is reporting that while it has will allow 86,000 historical M1 Garand rifles to be imported from South Korea, the Obama administration continues to block the importation of some 600,000 M1 Carbines because "they come with a magazine that can carry multiple rounds." From the article: Washington has agreed to allow the importation of M1 Garand rifles from Seoul, reversing its earlier decision to ban the shipping of the weapon used by South Korean and U.S. soldiers during the 1950-53 Korean War, a senior defense official said Wednesday. Washington has agreed to allow the importation of M1 Garand rifles from Seoul, reversing its earlier decision to ban the shipping of the weapon used by South Korean and U.S. soldiers during the 1950-53 Korean War, a senior defense official said Wednesday. “The U.S. government approved the imports of some 86,000 of the rifles,” said Lee Sun-chul, deputy defense minister for force and resources management. “The historic firearms are expected to be sold to American Korean War veterans and their families in time for the 62nd anniversary of the Korean War, which falls on June 25 this year.”

Washington, D.C. – A couple weeks ago, U.S. Representatives Cynthia Lummis and Joe Donnelly (D-IN) introduced H.R. 6240, the Collectable Firearms Protection Act. The bill would prevent the State Department from interfering with the legal importation of surplus collectable firearms from South Korea that were originally made in the U.S. “The State Department does not have the authority to deny legal firearms to law-abiding citizens. These firearms have historical value, are legal, and their importation is already highly regulated by the Justice Department. There is no basis for State Department involvement. This is not about diplomacy or foreign policy --...

The Obama-run Washington bureaucracy has classified a common and reliable rifle, the M1 Garand, as a “threat to public safety in the U.S.,” and the State Department has canceled plans by the Republic of Korea to return tens of thousands of surplus rifles to the U.S. for sale in the consumer market. The stunning classification of an ordinary gun that was used in the U.S. military for two decades and issued to thousands of soldiers and Marines during World War II and Korea as a threat came in a document by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. It is...

Americans outgunned by Taleban’s AK47s Marines on patrol armed with the M4 rifle. It may be the wrong weapon for the job Michael Evans, Pentagon Correspondent The future of the standard issue infantry rifle used by American troops in Afghanistan is under review amid concerns that it is the wrong weapon for the job. With its light bullets the M4 rifle lacks sufficient velocity and killing power in long-range firefights, leaving US troops outgunned by the Taleban and their AK47 Kalashnikovs and the old Russian SVD sniper rifle. British Forces face the same dilemma but the Ministry of Defence said...

Gentlemen, May I present my newest acquisition. A genuine "service grade" M1 Garand. I told everyone that this was a "Christmas gift from my uncle" which, in a way it was. I ordered this from the CMP the first week in December. I expected it around February but it showed up Christmas Eve. How's that for a government agency? Take another look at this bad boy. All I wanted was a shooter but this gun is beautiful. The stock is a little off but a little Tung oil will fix that right up. I am posting this for a reason....

Just picked up a 1943 M1 Garand. What I'd like to know is...EVERYTHING about the Garand. 1. I need to know where to get ball ammo to feed it (it's a bit scarce, as far as I can tell); 2. I'd like to know the best data sheet/book on the Garand (breakdown, cleaning, greasing, etc.); 3. The best info I can get on making the weapon as accurate as possible (peep sights on the current configuration); 4. Where I'm most likely to pick up the best (and best valued!) accessories for it (slings, parts, etc). I know...I should Google all...
