Every year, physics teacher David Lapp brings his Korean War era M-1 carbine to school, fires a shot into a block of wood and instructs his students to calculate the velocity of the bullet. It is a popular experiment at Mill Valley's Tamalpais High School, where students are exposed to several unique stunts that Lapp performs in his five classes every year to illustrate inertia, velocity and other complex formulae. Turns out, it also may be illegal. It is a felony to bring any rifle, loaded or unloaded, onto a school campus without the written permission of the school district...

The M-1 rifle holds the distinction of being the first practical semi-automatic rifle to be adopted for full-scale military service. Developed by John C. Garand in the late 1920s and early 1930s, it was adopted by the US Army in 1932, though limited scale issue didn't begin until 1936. By the time the production run ended in the 1950s, however, over 5 ½ million weapons had been produced. The rifle was well made and sturdy, though somewhat heavy for it's time (it was almost a full pound heavier than the German Mauser 98k was). The weapon is gas operated, with...

OK folks, here it is... everyone's favorite... an "I need FReeper opinions on a new gun" thread! Hooray! Here's the lowdown: I have $1,200 and I think I'm going to blow it on a new rifle. From the bit of looking into it his will be what folks call a "battle rifle". I'm thinking about .223 or .308 but I'm certainly open to other suggestions. I really can't spend anything over $1,200 even though I would like to. I can't get too crazy here. Any suggestions you would have, are greatly appreciated. I know everyone loves a good "gun thread"!...

CMP Reunites Korean War Veteran with Wartime Rifle Sitting on a hill overlooking the Imjin River in Korea in 1951, Army Private James Murphy of the 1st Cavalry, 8th Regiment, 2nd Battalion worked to flake off the mud encrusted on his M1 Garand rifle. After disassembling it for cleaning, he took the pencil he had used earlier to write a letter home and scrawled his initials on the end of the stock before reinstalling the butt plate. "I never gave it another thought," he said fifty-two years later, then pausing, added, "until a few weeks ago." James Murphy served in...
