Some critics have alleged that Florida's majority vote for President Bush was flawed. The Herald counted the votes in three North Florida counties and found little discrepancy. BY MEG LAUGHLIN AND DAVID KIDWELL mlaughlin@herald.com LAKE BUTLER - Since George W. Bush captured Florida and the White House again, critics have fixed their sights on northern pockets of the Sunshine State and asked: How did the Republicans win so heavily in counties stocked with Democrats? Some wondered whether Florida's tally was corrupt, with one Internet site writing: ``George W. Bush's vote tallies, especially in the key state of Florida, are so...

GROVELAND, Fla. -- The state that is the king of bizarre election finishes added another page to its quirky electoral history Friday: a city council race decided by a coin toss. G.P. Sloan, 77, and Richard Flynn, 75, each received 689 votes in the Nov. 2 election. No one emerged a winner after two recounts, so the candidates and three dozen supporters gathered for a coin flip Friday in the community center of this town of 4,400 residents located 25 miles west of Orlando. The city manager flipped a bicentennial dollar coin, and Flynn shouted "Heads." City manager Jason Yarborough...

Posted on Tue, Nov. 09, 2004 Judge Rejects ACLU Ballot-Count Suit CATHERINE WILSON Associated Press MIAMI - Election officials in two Florida counties will not be required to count absentee ballots returned after the polls closed on Election Day, regardless of what problems caused the ballots to be mailed late to voters, a federal judge ruled Tuesday. The American Civil Liberties Union had asked in a lawsuit for an emergency order requiring Miami-Dade and Broward officials to count the late ballots. The uncounted ballots would not change the outcome of the presidential race in Florida, where President Bush defeated Sen....

He said two people were inside the building watching election returns and saw the man walk up and throw the block. CLEVELAND — Thousands of people who are registered voters in Ohio and Florida possibly could vote twice in the presidential election through use of absentee ballots, The Plain Dealer reported Sunday. An investigation of voter rolls in the two key battleground states found that some double voting has occurred previously and could go undetected Tuesday, the newspaper said. Many states have only just begun to compile statewide voter registration lists to comply with a 2002 federal voting law. Such lists allow state officials to find double registrations within a state, but states rarely coordinate with one another. Virtually nothing prevents...

WASHINGTON — Florida again. And Ohio and Iowa and New Mexico and maybe Wisconsin or one or two other battleground states. All are possible settings for a replay of the court contests and recounts that marked the 2000 election. The neck-and-neck presidential election could end, as it almost always has through American history, with a clear winner and a gracious loser on Election Night. But armies of lawyers are ready for the alternative with an eye to fighting several Florida-style postelection legal wars at once. Lawyers set up command posts in key states weeks ago, and they have already filed...

Election violence surfaces in South Florida Published Tuesday, October 26, 2004 by Sean Salai Election-related violence is on the rise this week in South Florida as impassioned Republicans and Democrats duke it out at rallies and the polls. Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans and Independents in Palm Beach County, where voters last week began casting early ballots for the Nov. 2 general election, and strained feelings are already leading to hostility. In Boca Raton this weekend, county Republicans filled out police reports for shattered car windows at a Friday rally and a vandalism incident Sunday night at their headquarters. “I’ve never...

Fabiola Armitage is back on television, only instead of a campaign ad the focus has been on her mugshot. Armitage is a Kerry supporter and a strong believer in stem cell research. She's featured in an advertisement urging Floridians to vote against Amendment 3 on this year's ballot. The amendment would cap how much money a lawyer can make from a medical malpractice lawsuit.
