Rights: A Ninth Circuit Court ruling that students can't wear American flag T-shirts because they may offend Mexican students celebrating Cinco de Mayo is a ridiculous yet dangerous assault on the First Amendment. On Sept. 17, more than four years after Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, Calif., sent students home for wearing American flag t-shirts, an 11-judge Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals panel ruled that it was the right choice, "tailored to avert violence and focused on student safety." The decision upheld the court's three-judge ruling in February that justified the school's actions based on tensions between Mexican...

Martin Bashir, it seems, is not a fan of Sarah Palin. And during his MSNBC show and “Clear the Air” segment, he went looking for a way to roast the possible 2012 candidate who is now on a national bus tour. So what tool did he use to blast the woman even many of her detractors see as patriotic? The American flag. According to Bashir, Palin could be breaking the law by displaying the American flag on her tour bus: Here’s what he had to say: "In fact, the whole thing could be in breach of a federal law because...

MSNBC's Martin Bashir on May 31 insisted that Sarah Palin's bus tour amounts to a "breach of a federal law." Anchoring his eponymous program, Bashir scolded, "In fact, the whole thing could be in breach of a federal law because the United States Flag Code establishes important rules for the use and display of the stars and stripes, the flag of the United States." (VIDEO AT LINK) In his accusatory "Clear the Air" segment, the former ABC Nightline anchor lectured Palin that "standards of respect and etiquette" discourage using the American flag for "any advertising purpose whatsoever." "She drapes herself...

At least 20 American flags with the stars removed from the blue field and President Barack Obama's face inserted are still available on numerous eBay auctions – but, according to a state code, the listings may violate the law. WND found three auctions for dozens of defaced flags on the auction site – all located in the state of Washington and within one hour of one another: Castle Rock, Vancouver and Longview. The listings were posted by ucandoit45, mekaitlyn-2008 and jaysterd. The U.S. flag code does not specify penalties for desecration or misuse of the United States flag, but each...

Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., is the longest serving senator in U.S. history. No senator has served in more leadership positions; as president pro tempore, he is third in the line of succession. But he will be 92 in November and is in failing health. No man lives forever, so the question arises: When Sen. Byrd dies, should Connecticut lower its U.S. flags to honor his memory? The U.S. Flag Code permits half-staff honors "upon the death of principal figures" in the U.S. government. Sen. Byrd has been a prominent senator, but he is only 1 of 100 in his chamber...

I think this is probably my second vanity in my 9 years on FR, so I beg your forgiveness for this one. I usually try to get to the office early enough in the morning to assist our foreign born security guard to appropriately raise the flag and render appropriate honors. I have been ridiculed in the past by co-workers and managers alike, but as an Eagle Scout for the last 39 years, and a US Navy veteran, I feel that I am qualified to educate those who I come in contact with daily on observing proper flag etiquette. Today...

What's with all the backwards US flags I'm seeing on TV and the movies these days? On 3 separate episodes of NCIS, one of the cast members was in military BDU's and wearing the US flag on the upper right shoulder. Problem was the flag was made backwards (blue union on upper right instead of left). In one Van Damm movie the flag was draped over a casket upside down AND backwards. This at a military funeral. In one war movie, the flag on the tank was backwards. This is the epitome of ignorance, apathy, and disrepect as far as...

John McCain’s presidential campaign appears prepared to chastise Democrats over leaving behind piles of miniature American flags after Barack Obama’s nomination acceptance speech last Thursday in Denver. Boy Scouts reportedly have arrived with at least two dozen trash bags full of the flags at the site of a McCain rally scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. in Colorado Springs.

Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Two teenagers stole and burned a rainbow-colored American flag representing gays and lesbians that was displayed outside a store, police said. The 17-year-old boys took the flag from outside of David Wade's culinary supply store, called Inner Chef, according to Bloomington police. Wade said the flag, called the "New Glory," shows that all Americans are welcome at his business. A witness saw the boys take the flag and took a picture of their license plate with a cell phone camera. Police later tracked the plate and questioned the boys, who said they burned the flag because they...

I feel the need to lower my flag to half staff today, but nothing in established flag protocol says I should. I have a 24-foot pole in a suburban neighborhood. I spend the money to replace it with a nice clean 4x6 flag every three or four months. Most of my neighbors see it and compliment me on it and ask about it when I have lowered it. I'd like to do something to draw attention to this day in history and to honor the heroes and the victims. I'd appreciate everyone's thoughts on this. (it's still only 9:30 here).

Displaying the Flag Previous to Flag Day, June 14, 1923 there were no federal or state regulations governing display of the United States Flag. It was on this date that the National Flag Code was adopted by the National Flag Conference which was attended by representatives of the Army and Navy which had evolved their own procedures, and some 66 other national groups. This purpose of providing guidance based on the Army and Navy procedures relating to display and associated questions about the U.S. Flag was adopted by all organizations in attendance. WASHINGTON - President Bush has ordered flags at all federal facilities lowered to half-staff - the midpoint on the display pole - until July 5, 30 days after former President Reagan's death. For flags that can't be lowered, such as those on many homes, the American Legion says attaching a black ribbon or streamer to the top of the flag is an acceptable alternative. The ribbon should be the same width as a stripe on the flag and the same length as the flag. For a wall-mounted flag, three black mourning bows should be attached to the top edge of...

WILKES-BARRE - Local veterans are protesting the use of flags bearing the names of victims of Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in a memorial honoring them. Jim Walsh, a World War II veteran, said while there is no law against it, flag etiquette prohibits imprinting flags with any "mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture or drawing of any kind." The city plans to display 4,000 flags as part of its Healing Field memorial at Kirby Park May 15-31. About 1,500 flags are imprinted with names of Sept. 11 victims, including rescue personnel who perished responding to the terrorist attacks. "I...
