EVs Fall Short of EPA Estimates by a Much Larger Margin Than Gas Cars in Our Real-World Highway TestingWhile internal-combustion cars often match or exceed their EPA highway fuel economy numbers, a new paper using data from C/D's highway tests show that EVs are far worse at meeting expectations. By Caleb MillerPublished: Apr 21, 2023A new paper published by SAE International uses Car and Driver's real-world highway test data to show that electric vehicles underperform on real-world efficiency and range relative to the EPA figures by a much greater margin than internal-combustion vehicles. While the latter typically meet or exceed...

Beetroot shows it can provide a competitive edge when playing sport. Evaluating the performance effects of foods that are thought to have a beneficial effect on aerobic performance, researchers found that beetroot, grapes, sour cherries, and pine bark extract, which contribute to nitric oxide availability in the body, boost endurance exercise performance. The meta-analysis evaluated the effect of consuming nitrate-rich foods (typically green leafy vegetables), foods that contain polyphenols (such as berries, cherries and cocoa), and L-Citrulline (found in watermelon) on exercise endurance performance. The study found that the nitrate levels contained in beetroot, which have been shown to boost...

Scientists have found and filmed one of the greatest ever undiscovered shipwrecks 107 years after it sank. The Endurance, the lost vessel of Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, was found at the weekend at the bottom of the Weddell Sea. The ship was crushed by sea-ice and sank in 1915, forcing Shackleton and his men to make an astonishing escape on foot and in small boats. Video of the remains show Endurance to be in remarkable condition. Even though it has been sitting in 3km (10,000ft) of water for over a century, it looks just like it did on the...

The team broke through thick pack ice on Sunday to reach the vessel's last known position in the Weddell Sea. Robotic submersibles will now spend the next few days scouring the ocean floor for the maritime icon. Shackleton and his crew had to abandon Endurance in 1915 when it was crushed by sea ice and sank in 3,000m of water. Shackleton's skipper, Frank Worsely, was a very skilled navigator and used a sextant and chronometer to calculate the precise co-ordinates of the Endurance sinking - 68°39'30.0" South and 52°26'30.0" West.

You may be bundled up during the polar vortex that’s sweeping the nation, but for some outdoor enthusiasts, it was the perfect temperature for this year’s Arrowhead 135 ultramarathon. The a race is purposely held in late January or early February each year to line up with what they hope is the coldest temperatures of the year. It runs roughly 135 miles between International Falls, Minnesota, to Lake Vermillion in Minnesota along the arrowhead State Trail. This year, they were right on the money, as temperatures dropped as low as -30 degrees Fahrenheit. “It’s supposed to be coupled with this...

There are those who believe he should never have been allowed to be born. He came into this world prematurely with severe spina bifida, Chiari II malformation, hydrocephalus, autonomic dysreflexia, central sleep apnea, dysphagia, hypotonia and paralyzed vocal cords. He would develop chronic lung disease, anemia, kyphosis, knee contractures, osteopenia and so much more. In layman's terms, he was paralyzed, except for partial movement of his arms. He couldn't speak because his vocal cords were paralyzed, nor could he eat or even breathe on his own. His own family can't remember how many times the ambulance raced him to the...

The story of this extraordinary feat as related here , among other sources, and the background story, is that, BOSTON - Qualifying for the Boston Marathon is hard enough. Running the 26.2 miles on Patriot Day in Boston can be even more difficult. Lafayette man, David Clark, just ran the course four times in 24 hours. "I have 10 years of sobriety coming up this year and I wanted to do a run for addiction awareness," said Clark. A decade ago, Clark was 320 pounds and addicted to alcohol and painkillers. Today, he's 160 pounds and a seasoned ultramarathoner. "I...

Sea ice in the Antarctic is much less sensitive to the effects of climate change that that of the Arctic A hundred years of cars, planes, wars, and five billion more polluting people, and there’s nothing to show for it. Old log books kept by Scott and Shackleton show that Antarctic sea ice hasn’t changed much since 1912 reports Joanne Nova. Experts have been concerned that ice at the South Pole had declined significantly since the 1950s, which they feared was driven by man-made climate change. But new analysis suggests that conditions are now virtually identical to when the Terra...

On July 3rd, 2009, Sarah Palin resigned as Governor of Alaska, and nailed the following sign to her door: “Men Wanted For Hazardous Journey. Small wages. Bitter cold. Long months of complete darkness. Constant danger. Safe return doubtful. Honor and recognition in case of success.” This, the most famous newspaper advertisement ever penned, placed its original author, Sir Ernest Shackleton, in the position of having to select the crew for an Antarctic expedition from among the 5,000 men the ad brought to his office. Comparing Sara Palin to the greatest explorer in history might appear to stretch the limits of...

Scientists concerned about use of the drugs in athletics. Just in time for the Olympics, scientists say they have discovered drugs that could cause the next athletic doping scandal. In a study published today in the journal Cell1, scientists say they have found the first targeted drugs that boost endurance. They are already working with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to develop tests to expose would-be cheats who use the drugs. I started a thread on Who will Drop Out When where I predicted who would win place and show in each primary up to FL. On this key primary weekend, I thought I'd review my results and make new predictions. I'll leave the old polls in place to show far off they can be. I was partially right and partially wrong. The amazing thing is, no major candidate has dropped out yet. Rudy is in the most trouble of all of them, although in terms of funding, Huckabee has the least. The old polls and final results are from Real...

CHARLESTON -- One year ago, Deb Fowler made a deal with God to give up her daily nightcap if only he would return her son from the Atlantic Ocean. She hasn't had a nightcap since. Her ex-husband, Tony Driscoll, prayed for a modern-day miracle. Several days had passed since their teenage son, Troy Driscoll, and his best buddy, Josh Long, launched a small boat from Sullivans Island and disappeared. Out at sea, Troy and Josh looked out into an endless field of cold blue where water and sky meld and made their own deals with God. They sipped rainwater from...

Mexican Indians preserve epic endurance race By Tim Gaynor | December 15, 2005 CEROCAHUI, Mexico (Reuters) - Mexico's Tarahumara Indians are struggling to preserve one of the world's toughest endurance contests: a race of up to 100 miles over flinty mountain tracks while kicking a ball. The tribe calls itself the "Raramuri," which in its language means "foot runner," and its men take to the trails of northwest Mexico's Sierra Madre mountains every few weeks in flimsy sandals for a 24-hour-long foot race that would make marathon runners shiver. Their bizarre long-distance game, dubbed the "carrera de bola" or "ball...
